F1 tank locking lid gasket/damper
« on: September 18, 2024, 01:39:25 PM »
Just repainted my 1976 750F tank for which I had to remove a rubber strip that sits on the tank between the tank and the locking lid. I don't see a part number or it being listed on diagrams.

What could I use instead? I was thinking some RTV or gluing some kind of rubber stripping but wanted to see what others have done.

There should not be any "gasket" in that area.  got a picture?

On my CB 550 F there is also no gasket, but a drain pipe (top left, when you look down from a riding position). this will drain any rain water even while on the side stand. make sure its free by poking down an old clutch or throttle cable.

if you want to make a gasket, use something with closed pores, like neoprene, or foam rubber. ideally something strong enough to withstand modern fuel.

if you just want a cushion to make sure slamming/pressing on your tank lid wont scratch the tank, i'd suggest just protecting the corners, and not sealing off the whole lid. Otherwise you might block the tank ventilation.

Sort of. This is the best I got and I didn't really take more photos cause it was damn ugly.

Ohh, the tank vent gets rid of rain water too. I thought it was only for accidental spills while refueling. Did you happen to make a gasket of some kind because I don't plan on slamming the lid down but maybe it would be worthwhile for road vibrations.

This is an OEM setup for the CB750F.  No gasket, etc.  Likely designed that way to allow gas fumes to escape.

Thanks, good looking tank. I'll probably go no gasket unless I find that mine rubs.

VMR Paint. They have the OEM Colors if you’re interested.
