That rear wheel looks great! Did you paint the spokes or just clean? I hear you about “around the homestead”! The past week has been filled with getting rid of everything my wife hacks down and pulls out of her gardens. Cleaning up around are pond and filling the old barn with all the stuff that would suffer outside over winter. Working on the old plow truck, servicing the snow blower, snow tires, the list is endless. Having said that, the weather has been so glorious here, I’ve been sneaking out for a ride, every day. Tomorrow my buddy Gary is coming up and the plan is to ride ALL DAY. make the time, we’re not getting any younger. The bike projects can wait.

Have a great ride John. a day to think back on when the snow is flying.  I will confess, cleaned the spokes the best I could, paint saved the day.  I was able to save most of the rim chrome however....

Spokes look great! Ride was fantastic….. Gary’s ‘75 wing reminded him why he will never sell it and the old K3 performed flawlessly. I’d replaced the RHS bar switch and by passed the starter motor safety switch after the bike displayed some really weird electrical behaviour and it’s all back to normal. I used the style of switch with ON/OFF for the lights and must have got it all right. The K3 is the bike that I bought for the first Ganaraska 250 Moto Giro almost 15 years ago. Darn thing just keeps on running.

Got a rear wheel, chain and guard up and mounted with new brakes in the hub.  Next on the paint schedule is to finish out the frame paint and detail the motor.  I am going to get the bike up on blocks shortly to pull the front end also.  I am having no luck with my hand driver, heat, and penetrating oil in freeing up the spigot screws.  I have only gotten the one on jug four free so far and one of the screws had to be cold chiseled into submission.  With everything out of the way I should be able to get a full swing on the driver, if that doesn't work, I am living with the old gaskets.  Paint is on order in the color of Candy Blaze Orange Metallic, not an exact match to a true Honda color, but looked damn good on the swatch. I have also found a set of stripes off of FB Marketplace from a seller who had them left over from his project, I can't believe what the vendors are asking for a set this day and time.  The old stripes have been heat gunned off the tank, which is in really good shape, a little surface rust but I am going to coat it with Caswell just to be sure. It is the external tube single feed style petcock which is missing so I am shopping around for a replacement, they seem to much harder to find than the internal two screw double feed model. Upon pulling the gauges I found the speedometer works and the tac is frozen, just the opposite of what I usually find on these things. Yesterday when mounting the rear wheel I discovered the lower brake stay bolt was missing so off to the shed to pull one from the parts bike, which is really loosing a lot of weight.  I cleaned up the replacement on the wire wheel and went to do several other little odds and ends and when I came back to bolt everything up, the bolt had walked off.  I turned the garage upside down and still can't find the damn thing which I find truly annoying. They say when you can still recognize your own senility you are still ok. I am waiting for the neighbors to start talking any day now, "Looks like Mr. Carter forgot his pants again."

I really hate those spigot screws. I once buggered one so badly I had to pull the motor out of the frame to get it out. I’ve found a local supplier that sells exactly the same screw with a metric Allen socket head. They’re in all my bikes with lots of anti seize! The next guy will thank me.

Candy Blaze Orange Metallic, finished it up this afternoon. It is a tri coat rattle can job.   Will need a few days cure time in "Natures Oven", sitting in the sun.  Then stripes which are a real PITA  on the panel style tanks.  A few more days for the decals to really set and 3 or 4 coats of clear.

Old Dog, New Tricks.  I am going to try a different method this time around when it comes to applying the decals.  In the past I have always flatten the paint with wet sanding with 2000 or 2500 grit paper, laid the decals, and then cleared after they were completely dry.  Since this is a tri-coat paint I am laying two good coats of clear first, letting it completely cure, then wet sand and apply the decals and when they are completely dry re-clear first with a real dry coat on the graphics to set them, then two or three good wet coats of clear.  As I understand it, from my paint guru, "You Tube", it is not a good idea to wet sand tri coat paints and this method also gives better decal lines on the final job. If the finished product comes out decent I will post some additional shots, if not someone please call and talk me down off of the ledge........

I think the clear before decals is a great idea.  That's what I did on my 550 tank a while back and it turned out nice.

IIRC, I used 1k clear (2-3 coats), then after curing, lightly scuffed then added the decals, let set for 3 days, then put on 2k clear (2-3 coats).

That's my plan for my 750 tank in process.

I had a bad experience a while back applying 2k over 1k, it was on a chain guard if I recall correctly.   There was a reaction which caused bubbling in places.  You would probably be ok if you allowed enough curing time, but I seem to always be in a rush for some unknown reason......

Hit a set back, when the front end came apart, the rust maggots had really been busy.  I think I caught the bottom tripe tree in time but the left fork tube had rust right at the seal and was too far gone.  The ears was also pretty bad and not worth the effort to attempt patching.  I have a used complete set of fork tubes and ears coming from E bay via a vendor I have always had good luck with, but just another added expense not in the budget.  I am planning on wet sanding the clear on the tank and applying the decal in the next day or two.  If any of you live within a 50 mile radius of my abode you will probably hear the cursing....The early single stripe, a piece of cake, damn I hate trimming the panel decals to get that perfect overlap fit at the ends......

Sorry to hear about the fork tube, but that's the chance we take sometimes in buying these old bikes.

LOL, I think I heard you down here in NC on the last tank decals....

Damnit, we have stripes.  There are some wrinkles and one corner is a little off, but they are on.  I guess with enough practice you could finally get a perfect set mounted, but I really don't think I will live that long. I remember a saying we used to have from many years ago when I helping lay carpet as one of numerous part time jobs and something was tad off, "You can't see it from my house".   Crap I guess you can, but I am living with the shame.....A few days to dry completely,  apply the final clear, paint is done..........

They look great from here!

I'm about to install some K8 stripes in a day or 2, tank has been painted/cleared and sanded back down.

I did use 2k clear this time as the first 3 coats.  Believe it or not, that was 3 days ago and my 2k clear is still good, so I sanded my side covers back down to get out some rough spots and re-cleared them.

Tank needs to sit a few more days after decal is applied, so hoping I can get a good day late next week

Looks good from my house!

Years ago, I had a body set painted by a "shade tree" painter, he actually was pretty good at paint but failed on installing the K1 type stripes. I told him dont worry about it, I ordered another set and then I failed at the install as well.  Said screw it, it's not getting stripes and I ended up replacing the body set with the stripes already installed! Hey……! Did you even take one day off??

These stripe stories made me chuckle. When my Hot Rod builder friend painted the K3 tank and side covers I gave him a set of gold stripes. I picked the tank up and was surprised to see he’d painted the stripes by hand and then clear coated it to perfection…..

Gues why? The stick on stripes pissed him off to the point he binned them!

Stripes are a royal pita, used to paint RC car bodies that were 18th scale...so lots of intricate masking. We painted the underside of the body so everything was done in reverse.. If you can control bleed on your masking then painting stripes isn't too bad, now with laser levels and similar projection capabilities some things are easier if you take the time to level and set things up. Being patient and meticulous are handy traits for painters...

Britman, looks like excellent work to me. Anyone who complains should be shown your foot in their butt.. looks like mighty fine work to me!
