Some times you just have to laugh otherwise you'd cry
« on: October 03, 2024, 05:11:56 AM »
Almost ready to pull the engine. Pulled the oil filter housing and found there was no spring or washer in the assembly. Oh my. I had a feeling I needed to go right though this bike and it continues to prove that feeling right.

Missing number 5 and 6 in the diagram

I know one thing this bike is going to be alot better off than when I found it when I am done. Just takes time and hopefully few dollars.

Easy to let go with the filter when full of black dirty oil.
I have lost a spring with washer back in the days.
If oil tank is free from sand and small rubber parts passing the pump and up to oil restrictors and bottom end, no problem.

I am going to have to flush the oil tank and see what I find in there just to be sure.

According to the idiot oil light it had oil pressure right away. I have a oil pressure gauge coming for it as well.

Just another part of the journey. If it was easy I wouldn't learn as much.

There's an adapter available to convert these bikes from the element filter to a modern spin-on filter if you're interested in that.

So been reading up on the spin on filter conversion. The main claim is that the oem setup with a heavier oil and higher rpm could go to bypass.

From the general group here how many believe that to be true?

For the cost of the filter adapter vs the less than $12 Cad for the spring and washer, I am inclined to stick with stock unless others have had issues with it.

I'm about to remove a spin-on adapter and return to stock on the 550F I got last year and finally got registered here in CDMX. I've never had any issues with stock and I am getting the bike back to stockish. Spin-on seems to work fine but I just want stock.

I definitely dig the look of the spin on and I feel it would work better for me look wise. Heading in the direction of muscle bike. If you are parting with the adapter I would be interested.

Sure, I'm gonna let it go. I can send a photo later. I keep planning on doing the oil change but I need a little time -- I want to drop the pan and clean (and maybe paint) it as well as change the filter housing. Probably will happen in the next few days (although my wife keeps making us plans for the weekend...). I live in Mexico City, but I will be going to the States Nov 6-11 so if you want it I could ship it then.

Often you can find longer spin on filters which contain more filter area. Having more filter area means less chance of going into bypass. A longer filter with more filter area will last longer. That being said the stock filter works fine and it does have cooling fins, for what that is worth.

Like the others have said it's nice having a higher capacity filter.  I run Goldwing filters on my CB550s.  Plus it makes changing the oil faster.  Mix it with one of these and you've got a completely tool less 5 minute oil change.

Quick question for anyone who's got an adaptor: How to remove? I am assuming that it's an oil filter wrench to remove the filter, but how does the adaptor attach to the engine? Or, more to the point -- how do I remove it?

It just threads on where the OEM filter housing's through-bolt goes.  For the Randakk adapters you're meant to use a wrench with 2 pins on it to install/remove it.  Something like this - https://www.amazon.com/Grinder-Universal-Adjustable-Wrench-Machine/dp/B07MFY3HNY/

All spin on filters, I have had in my hands were extremely thin skinned. A thing to weigh in your decision: not only terrain but also roads have sharp gravel here and there and if that on impact can break a windscreen, it can also damage a thin skinned device that's only inches above the road. The OEM filter is robustly housed.

Never had a problem with spin on motorcycle filters on motorcycles. Have used automotive filters on bikes also. |Most modern bikes come with thin walled spin oil filters. I would not worry about them standing up, look at how thin a plastic fairing lower is and the road crap it withstands.

I have been on so many gravel roads varying from Norway to Greece that I would never risk it. BTW, the OEM filter is thus oversized, you can double the replace interval no prob.

I looked at the photo on Cycle X's site and that's what I thought too -- I've got something similar for my angle grinder so I will give that a shot...

many gravel roads

Probably good to leave yours stock and put a skid pan on it, over here in Canada we use dirt or adventure bikes for that.

I've ridden a ton of gravel roads on my Suzuki GSX-S1000 and never had any issues.  Never even had a dent on the oil filter and it's right behind the front wheel.

I had two different Harleys. Both lost a belt due to.a rock. I lived on a dirt road at the time. I definitely did not have the right tool for the job, LOL. Ask me how I feel about belts, hahaha
