Head Gasket kit
« on: October 05, 2024, 10:26:41 AM »
Hi all,

I am looking to replace my head gasket finally and I was hoping to get a recommendation on a kit (all the seals, coins, etc) and if I could get a rec for the specific gasket. Have any of you gone MLS? Is there a composite head gasket that will not wick oil out of the seal the way the old ones do?

Assuming you are talking about a sohc 750. The kits from Ken at cyclex are really nice. They come with everything you need. With the MLS head gaskets, HD head studs are recommended. Surface finish on the head and cylinders are also vary important for MLS gaskets to work properly.

Thank you for the quick reply. For the surface finishing, is careful sanding sufficient? Do you recommend any other material than MLS?

If you have a proper surface plate you could lap the surfaces but it would be easier and likely much cheaper to have it surfaced at a machine shop if you don't already have the tools. Standard composit head gaskets work well for standard rebuilds and they are more forgiving for surface finish.

Take your cylinders to a machine shop and have them milled off (decked) 0.010". If you don't, they WILL leak oil at the 2 oil ports where they pass the oil up to the cam. The modern head gaskets are ALL thicker than the OEM gasket, which was 0.8mm thick (all of the new ones are 1.0mm or even thicker, measure the one you get to find out), so the 2 O-rings in the oil ports cannot seal the ports, and you will have an oily mess after reassembly and less than 100 miles. Bet on it. ;)

Then, PM me for 2 O-rings I will send you to help seal those ports.

No one tried to make a copper head gasket, ala Alan Millyard and his 6 cylinder Z1? If the thickness is correct then the original orings should be ok as well.

Mark,

Are those o-rings the 11x2,5 (or 16mm rubber packing) shown on the parts fiche? What size are the ones you have substituted?

If not, which ones are you referring to?

Yep. I bought about 300 (twice) of the 10.8x2.62mm size (Parker #02-111) so I could get them for 5 cents apiece, several years ago. I send them out to anyone who will wait long enough to get them, so they don't end up with a leaking head gasket. They work perfectly with the Vesrah head gasket and the NE type (if you actually get an NE gasket with cylinder holes that match your engine - many don't).
