Topic: Dynatek ignition help

I’m having trouble with blown fuses since installing the Dynatek electronic ignition on my 74 CB550.

Directions say to run the red wire to a ‘key switch power source’ so I tied it into the brake pedal power. I’ve used the same connectors I’ve used on previous builds but removed the waterproof covers for the pic.

Based on their directions I think I’ve connected everything right. Anyone here run into this issue?

Bike ran ‘well enough’ with the points but I wanted to see what all the hype was about with the Dynatek. The issue didn’t start until I installed the Dynatek.

The brake light is powered by the 15A main fuse.

U should me to on. It’s the 7amp fuels that keeps blowing.

I would not tie it to the BRAKE circuit instead tie it into the BLK/WHT circuit for the coil power. The BRAKE may not have a large enough fuse to handle the igntion and brake light when activated.

That's my input.

Thanks calj737. I tried to tie it in to the blk/wht wire that powers the coils and it still blows the 7a fuse and it kills the bike.

Stupid question.  I installed one on my 750.  Is there anything I need to check from time to time.  Timing, etc.

I’ll take another look at the fuses. I know the 7 amp is blowing and the bike dies.

The headlight and taillight both go out. Bulbs are new and come back on with new fuse.

When the headlight fuse blows, the headlight goes out, but the taillight still works and the bike still runs, likewise if the taillight fuse blows. Both the headlight and taillight fuses get power through the main fuse; if the main fuse blows, all lights go out and the engine dies. It sounds like you have a 7 amp fuse installed in the main fuse location instead of a 15 amp fuse.

I didn’t have the fuses in the correct spots on the fuse holder. It’s even labeled. I’m an idiot.

I considered suggesting you to check this, but I was afraid it would have been received as an insult... 
The reason? Well see the pics below. It's quite impressive to see what Honda did to prevent such error.
BTW, have you found your reading glasses yet?

I see those glass fuses.  I had to drive all around Springfield, at a bike race, looking for glass fuses while using a cigarette wrapper.  Switched to blade fuses as soon as I got home.

In Europe they are widely available. I like them. When one blows, you can see it rightaway and some of us can even diagnose the blow's cause. It's no bad practice to have a look at your fuse box after 40 years of service and see if it needs some cleaning.

Don’t feel bad, here’s my latest goof from a few weeks ago;

Yesterday I had to correct my own stupid mistake. When I added fuel to the tank, my painstakingly restored petcock started pissing fuel everywhere. And not just a bit. Cleaned up and opened it up to see what faulty part was to blame.

Imagine my surprise when I found the “wavey washer” UNDER the lever disc instead of ON TOP of it. There’s an idiot in my shop and apparently it’s me!

Good news is I’m done.
