Just Purchased - Lotza Love Req'd

this bike has been sitting for 17years in a garage. Gas tank full and dead battery. Spokes are rusted, engine plating is rusted in areas. I did push the pedal and it does have some compression. More on this as I get into it. Any suggesions always welcome.

I will not be able to work on it until I get an AMC20 axle rebuilt and installed for a friend. I also have a 93 xj900F that I need to finish. It is a custom and have just found a tank which requires some welding and fitting, but looks do-able.

Welcome….. I’ve done three of these and they are well worth it. Undervalued (when compared to earlier versions) but still a lovely bike!

How different is the engine from any of the early K0 to K3 engines?

Carbs are a #$%*e, many minor differences non majour
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

There are differences, like primary drive ratio (one more tooth on the clutch end of the chains), type of clutch plates (top one is a 'slipper' plate, has the double-spring steels in the stack usually right behind the 1st outer plate), different clutch cover to fit this stuff, smaller combustion chamber than the early bikes, slightly domed pistons, cam intake opens at 0 degrees instead of 5 (ish) BTDC, there's 5 degrees of cam overlap between intake-exhaust cycles so it makes it a lean-burn engine, exhaust studs changed (and the clamps) and the carbs became PD41a/b type on the K7 ("A" normally, "B" for California and New York emissions). The chain became a 630 type with different sprockets, and the rear wheel hub changed to accommodate that stuff. The front disc caliper changed from the early "K" type, and the disc. The swingarm changed to have different chain adjusters and thinner rear axle supports, and the 1-in-the-middle grease zerk for the bushings (which never worked). Inside the tranny the bronze gear bushings changed to cast iron type instead. The wiring changed to have the in-the-instruments-cluster keyswitch and dashboard lights and the front running lights could be used to guide a Boeing 747 in for a landing.

That's most of the differences. ;)

On the subject of K 7 and K 8, why did Honda change the upper left motor mount between the K7 and the K8 750's? The K7 having the bolt up type and the K 8 having a casting if I remember correctly

It actually changed DURING the K7! I once saw an [online] Honda bulletin somewhere about the change. I also rebuilt a K8 that I [briefly] owned that had the earlier-style K7 mount there, too. At first I thought it was a frame-swap'd thing, but the frame number was correct. I think the last years of the 750K were sorta like the first years of the K0 in some ways.

Unless you are married to the original exhaust or a repop, I recommend the Delkevic. My original 1977 exhausts were beyond saving. The Delkevic entire system weighs less than one of the OEM pipes.

Sorry that I have not responded to your posts but I have been very busy. I'm currently juggling several projects, trying to get them out of the way.

@denward17 - This bike was purchased by the brother of my brother-in-law.
                      They both bought identical bikes on March 28, 1978.
                      I will enjoy reading about your work and I will have a look soon, when I start on this one.
@BenelliSEI  - Three bikes,,, wow, your really had some time on your hands.
                      Hopefully they were not in too bad of shape.
@bryanj       -  Can you explain what you mean about the carbs?
@Dime         -  How far will you be diving into your project? Have you already posted your progress?
@beemrbum -  Last I looked at the tips,, it appears they are burned out (or rusted out), salt on German Roads.
@MauiK3 and @HondaMan - Great interation, responses and information.

It's really nice to see that there is still loads of interest around these historical machines. I just hope there is enough parts left out there to get them all going again.

It looks like a worthy project to bring back to life.
There is a Project Section where you can run a thread on it's progress keeping all the progress together.

What bryanj probably means is the PD carbs are more complex than the earlier roundtop carbs to get clean with the added idle circuits. Here are a few links on cleaning the pd carbs.

What i mean is they are very difficult to clean, very awkward to srtip and rebuild plus if not used very regularly block up quickly, so much so that personally i now just wont work on them!

That looks like a relatively easy project as most of the parts are there. The headlight stays might be incorrect and maybe the bucket, missing grab bar and chrome tank trim is all I see needing for cosmetic parts. New plastic replica side covers from LPM will go good on that. The engine will polish up nicely and should be tested before removal. I have seen a lot worse. Mine looked like yours plus the mufflers were rotted out. I have put lots of miles, oil changes and tires on it and it has been very reliable.

This is one of the few changes that has never really been explained! Weird.

Thanks bryanj for clarifying.. I am afraid that I do not have much of a choice, since supply is limited here in Germany. I will clean them up and see how well it goes. And keep in mind that these are difficult to stay clean and open.

He asked for a Eaton TrueTrac Helical LSD, I ordered it from Ron's Machining Service, when it was delivered, it came without the ThrustButton inside the carrier, so I just ordered the 1 piece axle kit, it will be delivered Monday.

Thanks Bryan, I will not be overhauling them until later. First I should test to see if it will even run.. using my universal hanging tank with fresh gas to quickly check.

My first new CB750 was the K7 back in the day. In fact this forum helped me do my first carb rebuild on it in 2000. I then bought a 1500 Wing and sold the bike to a friend. This will be fun watching your progress. Do you have both side covers? I may have one laying around here.
