Knee replacement
« on: October 24, 2024, 05:41:00 AM »
Man just had knee replaced on the right knee, and #$%* it hurts.

Went in at 10AM, was home by noon.

Doing the ROMTech machine already, 5 times a day.

Hurting like sh1t. Swelled beyond belief.

What the h3ll did I get myself into..........!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enough venting. Now on to working on the twin 350 I'm rebuilding.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

From someone who has been there and done that, it will improve.  The first couple of weeks are a real "PAIN" no pun intended, but it does subside as the days go by.  Do your PT, do not skip a day whether at home or in the office.  It speeds the process of healing. Try to throw aside the heavy duty pain killers as soon as you can, a lot of side effects for temporary relief.  When I had mine done I had gotten to the point I could not get in my truck without cursing the pain, and riding a bike was just to damn painful.  Trust me, well worth the trouble for the final results......

My wife had an icing machine (loaned to her when she shattered her heel) that is specifically designed for after knee replacement. A wrap that goes around the knee is hooked up with hoses to a pump in a small ice chest. We loaded it up and turned on the pump. She then lent it to a friend that had knee replacement and he said it was fantastic, especially in the first few weeks. Have a look around…..

I have couple of friends who had both knees done.
After they healed up they were amazed at the improvement.
They were very happy and were able to be a lot more active.
I expect I'll have to have at least my right knee done at some point. It has issues.

A fellow worker had his knee replaced (damaged from being an Army Ranger when the helicopter they were jumping from was accidentally 35 feet up, not 5 feet up, in full gear, ouch!) and took off 4 days from work while he iced it and did the exercises. On the 5th day I was startled when he showed up behind me at work (loud machinery all around) on both feet, with one crutch to sorta-assist! The week after that he walked in like it never happened, and boy, is he a happy camper now!

Another one's middle finger joint froze up (calcified) and couldn't be moved, even externally. He got an 'artificial joint' put in, looked like it was 2x normal diameter for a week. About another week and he could bend it fully to his palm. Another week and all he had left from it all was the scar, hand worked perfectly.

Cool stuff!

I had my right knee done in July 2023, it was a great success. Was on 2 crutches for a couple of weeks and then one until about 6 weeks after the op I walked unaided and went back to work.

I have an appointment in November to review an MRI of left knee, I hope the surgeon agrees it's replacement is due also.

Bear with it....

I know a lady who ignored them, drove with her left foot to/from the doctor and to work, never took off another day after a week following the surgery. Her right hip socket was a huge hole and she needed a crutch to walk: after that surgery she put the crutch in a closet to rot, she says. ;)

Left knee is really bad too, doc wants me back in here as soon as possible to cut that one up.

Plus rotator cuff tear in te right shoulder that has to wait till these are thru.

Yeah, I get it: my back was broken when I was 6 years old, but no one knew at the time - we were in the process of moving from Vacaville, CA (Travis AFB) to Manhattan Beach, CA (Vandenberg AFB) at the time. I ended up growing up with it, not knowing that everyone else didn't have a knife-in-the-back 100% of the time. It often made me amazed at how far everyone else could run, jump, and play when I was a kid.

I didn't find a doctor who was brave (smart?) enough to go in and 'fix' the resulting damage until I was 68 years old. Now I feel like a little kid in comparison! :)

My wife had the hip done and then the knee, her knee was the last day of elective surgery before the covid shutdown. She said the hip was easier but both were worthwhile.

There is just one other side effect that nobody brings up, you can not put weight on the new metal knee.  I am referring to getting on your knees to pull weeds or work on something in the garage.  It is not painful but it just feels totally wrong, a very unpleasant sensation.  A perfect example would be this morning, I had to into the crawl space under my abode to change out the furnace filter.  I very much resembled a three legged dog going in and out. Nothing you can't live with considering the pain is gone, but just another indication you are getting old as hell......

Definitely have to do the PT after a joint replacement if you wanna return to active life. A good set of knee pads have always been used by me, or some foam anti fatigue sheets since ai destroyed the PCL in my right knee back in 2005. I cannot handle the pain otherwise.

I finally found a Good Podiatrist who accepts my Medicare and I'm going in on Nov. 7 for 'bone cutting' surgery on it this time(had a mild operation done to it 8 yrs ago, wasn't worth much)and I'll need to be on crutches or in a wheelchair for 8 weeks  :o
I won't be able to ride, drive, etc.,plus I don't know anyone here in this city;not sure what I'm going to do about connecting with someone here who cares, but I'll find out.  ::)

Am I reading that right, you had a whole knee replacement all done inside 2 hours? I thought over here (UK)  they put you out for jobs like that & you'd be there ages. I can't imagine having that done under local anaesthetic either, there's some things I'd rather not know are happening

Wow...I have foot problems too. They wanted to do surgery a couple of years ago. They told me they would shave fuse the bones, so I would have to walk flat footed.

Sh1t, that's the way I walked then. Never had it done.

Knees and shoulders are the priority at the moment. Right knee this month, left knee in January. Left done 2022, right will be done May 2025.

Every AM when I wake up I have 'trigger finger' in the middle joint of both middle fingers (maybe used them too much back in the 1970s?...). I think of all you guys' bad joints every AM when I stand in the shower, trying to warm these up to use them for the day.

Get your Dr to order forearm crutches so you can maneuver easier. They are far easier to use and are safer to  navigate stairs with than regular crutches are. A friend lent me a pair after my mc accident in 2013, I was living in a basement at the time, I started off on regular crutches and almost fell several times as well as the fact my arms were strained and bruised in the accident. The forearm crutches were life savers. Plus you don't get the arm pit bruises from regular crutches.
