Just sold my restored 400F to a guy with a cool story.
« on: October 27, 2024, 11:39:12 AM »
About a year ago I decided I was going to sell my 400, having ridden it about 3500 miles after restoring. I didn't list it until recently when I had time to detail and photograph it. I wanted to use bring a trailer, but I was worried about their demand for a no reserve auction, and I've seen a couple 400's go for too little recently on there. So I listed it locally with a high price I thought was fair.

I enjoy riding the 400 but I always had a conflicted feeling of wanting to baby it, but also didn't like the idea of it sitting unused in the garage. I also suddenly felt stressed owning 5, 6 or 7 bikes at a time and began downsizing that number. This year I've sold my CL350 and replaced it with an XR650. I've now sold the 400, leaving me with two 750's, the K0 and my chopper. Friends are pressuring me to sell the 750 chopper and build a big twin harley... which I may do after sitting on a couple of their bikes. I am simply too tall to be riding small uncomfortable bikes and I never realized it until I sat on something that fit me better... I could only make the 750 chopper comfortable if I were to put ugly forward controls on it. And having seen my reflection while riding in a storefront window, I look absolutely huge on this frame.

Anyways, back to the original story I was meaning to tell, I found a buyer locally who had bought a 400 new back in the day. He said it was the same year and color as well. After he sold the bike at some point he never got another motorcycle until now. So with a 30 or so year break in between, he will have only ridden 2 bikes in his entire life, that original 400 and mine. Pretty cool story in my opinion. So now he gets to have an almost new 400 again, and he'll likely ride it less than 200 miles a year. He can baby it let it sit in the garage and be admired.

Glad it has found a very good home. I agree, those bags look great on it too.

Very cool!
I love it when the story ends with a smile and another SOHC4 rider of old back in the fold.

That a great looking baby bagger and a great story of finding the right buyer locally.

If you look "absolutely huge" on a 750, cant imagine what you're are like on the 400?!

A few years back I wanted a 400F and saw a very nice one in person at a local bike show.  I was surprised how small the physical size was, guess I was expecting it to be similar to a 500.  I already have a small RD350 and the size of the 400 turned me off, that was the end of a search for one.

I'm currently looking for a photo of me on the 750 chopper. Standby for that one . The stock 750 is sized appropriately however, as is the XR650. I'm 6'-2" so the problem is mainly my inseam, once I have boots on it's like 36" of leg.

I will be going over today or tomorrow to deliver the bike and I'll tell him about the forum then. I also told him about all the local vintage events that he can bring it to. He actually lives less than a mile from me. Pretty funny!
