Hello from Oregon
« on: October 31, 2024, 08:01:02 AM »
I've been enjoying reading helpful posts for about a year and figured it's time to join. I'm a retired carpenter and have re-discovered motorcycles. In '82, I bought a new GPZ550. Not knowing anything about it, rode it for 2 years and sold it. 40 years later, had a 2002 KLR fall in my lap. Changed my life for the better. Learning to wrench, rebuild and ride ! Wanting another motorcycle project, I bought a basket case 1971 CB500K. Sat for 15 years. LONG term project. No hurry. Enjoying working on it. finding broken, rusty or bent stuff is common. Shortly after I acquired a shop full 70's CB500, 550 and 650 parts. This has helped tremendously. The CB500 now has a 1979 CB650 engine in the process of a top end rebuild. Objective is to Finish the '71 and get rid of all the extra stuff. Simplify and ride.

Hello and welcome from Texas.   I also had a GPz550, what a screaming bike it was!  I sold it last year to a kid that was buying it for hid Father [who had owned one earlier in life]

A 500 with a 650 motor is a nice upgrade! Consider starting a thread in the Project Shop area.

I'm in Corvallis. Oregon State University town. I was in California when I had the GPZ. Beautiful super fast and fun bike. Young and dumb, got way too many tickets on it. My current 1971 cb was going to be a restore while ride bike. Well... Frozen motor, bent rear frame, blown forks, bad electrical. On and on. I kind of walked into it knowingly. A project I got ! I answered an ad for a few CB500 parts. Cool guy moving. Hit it off and he gave me 2 truck loads of vintage CB stuff. 1979 650 motor is bored 1 mm over, 1981 head, cam and carbs, rebuilt wheels, hand made harness, handmade seat and cowl, cb750 tank I like the looks of the bigger tank), repaired frame. Most of this is in the works and doing everything myself. Having fun.
