Help with installing new coils?
« on: October 31, 2024, 05:30:26 PM »
I bought a new Charlie's Place coil set for my CB400F, but didn't realize I'd have to drill into my frame in order to mount it. Does anyone have/sell brackets for the Charlie's Place coils that can use the original mounting spot/hardware?

Thank you!

Gotta couple off questions,
1.   Are they dyna's?
2.        "      "      3 ohm?
The site shows dyna' and they're 3 ohm. If they are, you may want to take step back.

You can modify the honda coil mounts with very minimal work and use them, but if you're mounting 3ohm coils to a bike designed for 5ohm, you're going to have issues keeping the battery sufficiently charged.

I happen to disagree. It's time to bust this myth that 3 Ohm coils are consuming so much more power. They don't. I have measured the amps and the difference is, mwah, neglectable*. Use the bike for what it was meant: start and ride! Avoid prolonged idling. Have a look in the Shop Manual Honda CB400F, in particular the chapter that covers the electrical and in p.62** you'll find specified that @5000 RPM (14,5V) the alternator is capable of 13A, btw the very same output I had deducted for the CB500/550 just the other day.

Here's some photos of the old coils and the new coils. Is there a "drop-in" replacement for the coils that I can use until I have the time to get these new coils mounted? I've got a milling machine but it's deep in the garage and not set up at all. Alternatively, is there someone that i can reach out to for custom brackets?

Thanks

Won't work. Here's an experiment for anyone interested. Loosen the bolts that hold the coils, so that the coils are just a tiny bit free. Then start the engine and watch the coils moving wildly as if they want to break free (magnetism at work). Spectacle!

1/2" wide x 3/4" long tab in anything from 10ga to 16ga. Drill two holes in it, bolt one end to the stock coil bracket and bolt the other end to the new coil (you'll have to scrounge up a nut and bolt). The slotted holes in the new coil will be quite forgiving.

Is there anything wrong with the stock coils?

The boots screw onto the ends of the wires. Look inside and there is something that looks like a wood screw. Trim off about 1/4" from the wire and screw the boot back on. ;)

well...now that THAT problem is taken care of, what's the best way to screw in spark plugs after the crush washer is already crushed? I can't find any torque specs anywhere, and I'd really like to not crack my block or strip the threads as I'm trying to dial in my mixture!

I just snug them down, about like a small 6mm bolt. They won't come loose.
For coils for the 750/500/550/400F/350F I use these:

from PartsNmore here:

They are carbon-copies of the old TEC coils, electrically and physically.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.
