Can't figure out how to remove cam towers
« on: November 02, 2024, 12:42:48 AM »
I have the cam out and want to proceed in removing head but am stumped as to removing the cam towers.

In the manual is talks about removing 5 6mm bolts with a special tool, but I can't find the 5 6mm bolts.

It looks like I have all the bolts out except for the head bolts surrounding the cam towers. It doesn't look like the head bolts are actually securing the towers though.

A bit of help would be much appreciated. Thank you

They can stick on the studs

Re: Can't figure out how to remove cam towers- solved now head is stuck

Cam towers are off now the head is stuck to the cylinders. Trying to lift the cylinders and all with the head. I made sure I have all the head nuts off as well as that small bolt on the intake side. No joy.

Sprayed all the studs down with penetrant oil and letting it sit now. I like to be very careful any time I am tearing down an engine, especially for the first time. So please bear with me.

No man, LOL. I just had to slow down and think about it. It said it had 5 6mm bolts. There were four under the cam towers. Once removed it was still a bear but the head came. Slow and steady. Thanks for the help.

There are five (early) or six (late) "small" 6mm bolts between the head and cylinders, four of which are under the rubber "coin" seals beneath the cam towers. Early and late models had the one 6mm bolt on the intake side while later models added one on the exhaust side. Once those are all removed and they still won't separate there are indeed pry points on the intake side in the vicinity between the 1-2 carbs and between the 3-4 carbs. Look for the thickened casting at these locations and use care. I had one engine where some goob used some sort of industrial adhesive on the head gasket to the point that the head gasket actually delaminated when I finally got them apart with half the gasket stuck to the head and the other half of the gasket stuck to the cylinders... ffs

Sounds like you got it sorted.

That is funny as my engine is a 78 and only had the 5 6mm bolts not the six. 392 head and engine code matches to 78.

78 should be 410, or is it a K
