Two out of four
« on: December 26, 2024, 09:22:10 AM »
As noted in my previous post, "ignition parts" I have a no fire on cylinders 2 and 3. I think I found the problem. The coil to cylinder 1 and 4 looked newer and those cylinders were firing. The coil to cylinders 2 and 3 looked old and different. I used an Ohm meter and checked both. across the post they were similar, but between the plug wires the old coil had Zero resistance. So, I will order a new coil and go from there. All of this is just so I can do a compression check and to see what condition the engine is in. I got this bike a few weeks ago and have had little time to work on it. I got it from a guy that got it from a guy. It's a 1977 750K. The first guy decided to turn it into a cafe racer. The frame has been cut behind the rear shocks, someone made a sheet metal seat for it, and he put clubman bars on it. Looks like the front disc brake caliper may have been changed along with the master cylinder. The lights have all been taken off and the bike has a rusty Super Sport gas tank. The second guy, put a set of CR 29 carbs on and a four into one header. Thats the shape it's in now. they say, " don't buy anyone else's project". Well, I did anyway. I didn't pay much for it, about the price of the carbs and headers. Once I get it running on all four cylinders and see if it has any life left in it, i will go from there.

The middle picture is the coil for 1 and 4, it works. The next picture is the coil for 2 and three.

You don't really need a spark for a compression test, it just needs to spin over. You might even get results with the kick start.  The bike shows a lot of promise, it sounds like you bought it right and can have a lot of fun with it.
Sometimes I forget to enjoy the work and focus on getting the ride. That leads me to shortcuts that I regret later, take your time and enjoy the process, take a lot of pics and show us too.

Don R. I felt like I might get the best results if the bike was warmed up. its got to run on all cylinders anyway. I ordered a coil from 4 into 1. It will be here in a few days.

It is true, it will test better warm and usually better after a couple tanks of gas run through it.

Even after you warm it up, the readings might be disappointing. As long as they are even, carry on. I find that after a few hundred kilometres the numbers improve dramatically, especially on machines that haven’t run for a long time…..

Careful on the rear tire clearance. It might destroy that seat on the first real bump!

That "seat " is not even attached. It's just sitting there. It's definitely something that I will have to take care of.

Looks like a great start to a project! I'd say the previous owner might have gone a little crazy with the black spray paint though.

I definitely agree with the others sentiments, putting some miles on it will bring out the Honda self-healing properties. I've seen many a piston ring losen up and reseat.

Yeah, I am not crazy about everything being black. I will get it running first and make it pretty later.

Well, I thought I might have found the problem, maybe not. The coil for cylinder 2 and 3 was defective, so I got another coil. I put that on today and the bike sounded better when I fired it up. I pointed my infrared gun at number three, and it was now getting hot, however number two was still cool. I pulled the plug from number two and ground it two the head. There was plenty of spark. Maybe number two carb is blocked, and that cylinder is getting no fuel, but it's a brand-new set of carbs. I am still going to do a compression test, but I am not going to hold my breath. If that Cylinder is bad, I may pull the good parts off the bike and sell it like it is. Since I have decided to go down this path, I have already contacted a guy about another 750.

Sounds like the idle jet might be plugged on that cylinder?

I need to rev the engine up and see if that cylinder gets hot. But like I say, the carbs are brand new.

The bike has a rusty Super Sport gas tank.

The 1st post you said the bike has a rusty Super Sport gas tank.
Inside is rusty? If so, you probably have rust in the carbs plugging the circuits. Remove the carb bowls, is there rust in them? If so, you need to clean the tank of rust and clean the carbs. Even minor surface rust in the tank will dislodge the rust and get in the carbs.

I have an auxiliary gas tank hooked up to the fuel filter. It looks kinda like a IV. Of course, if rust got by the filter while fuel was in the tank it could clog a carb. I will have to take the carb bowls off and see.
