I couldn't help myself but....got a 78F in the mix
« on: November 12, 2024, 02:55:24 AM »
I saw this 78F in a Craigslist ad last Wednesday morning in the parts section,  3.5 hrs away in Schenectady NY, sent a reply with my number and got a call back shortly after from the original owner. It looked decent for 32,000 miles on it, he said his brother got it running again after it sat in the garage for some years.
"After my initial ownership of 30 years, my brother took care of some maintenance and updates (points, oil changes, etc) and after he rode it for a few years he gave it back to me to sell since it was originally mine.  The title is in his name since the original was misplaced and he went through the nightmare with DMV to get a new title. Glad he has the  mechanical aptitude to get running as well as he did."

It seems to be 100% there, minimal rust other that the headers and muffler(plan to send the headers to get rechrome like majorzozo did!) and fix the stock muffler. The carbs will need cleaning and rebuild(leaks and hard to start). The tank appears to have been lined so I will need to bore scope the tank closely to see it's condition. He said the back brake is hanging up. No major dings in the tank and the side covers are whole! The paint is a good rider shape too. The toolkit is complete, needs a new bag. It came with a new battery. Definitely needs tires. I couldn't pass it up for a grand.
For now I'll do the things to get it running as a rider for a season to see if the seals will swell in the head to slow the oil leaks and see what I'll do with it later. It's going to be a busy winter with all my projects.......🤔

I'm looking forward too Den! Might be slow progress for a bit. I'm not fast and have previous comments to finish first.....

Stu…… NICE find. Looks good. Worth the drive, for sure. Whenever I think they have “dried up”, another one comes out of the woodwork! Good plan to get it running and ride it. After a few hundred miles, you’ll be better placed to decide what it really needs.

Congrats on a sweet find. If I saw a deal like that I'd be there too. The 77/8 rear caliper is supposedly better than the 75/6 just a single piston but big enough and easier to repair.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Cool Stu, congrats. Change out those side cover grommets so those side covers stay intact...little lube on them too...
Glad you are giving it a good home, now you have something to keep you out of trouble this winter...

Thanks again guys, it is a sweet bike and I thought was a good price, the guy was honorable, he was offered more and to to get more by a guy from NC that wanted it, if I hadn't bought it he probably would have raised the price but he said that he made the deal and was sticking to it.

Yes Don I know of the rear caliper differences,  I have a 76 F1 also in the queue to bring back to life. (Just got a great paint set for it last week from Corey Edwards in KY)

David, yes you are correct on the side cover grommets needing replacement on all Hondas(learned that on my 99 GL1500 SE the hard way....)

Alan, your carbs will be done before this gets attacked.
