Honda piston base tool dimensions?
« on: December 07, 2024, 02:58:26 PM »
Hello & Happy Holidays everyone! I’m looking for the height of said base tool? Seems width should be 2” & rod-slit 1/2”-5/8” overall length 4-5”. I wanna make a couple out of hardwood since they’re $70 & up! Then I wanna find those ring compressors lol

One on ebay is $14.00 and has pictures showing 5 1/4" long X 1 1/2" wide. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the height or slot size.
 By scaling the pics I'd guess 1/2" thick and a 3 1/4" X 5/8" slot.

I might make myself a pair.

I've made a couple pairs. I think one is 3/4" and the other one is thicker. I did some guesstimating for each pair because one was a CB 550 and one a DOHC 750.

I made a pair tonight out of 1/2" oak, 3/4" would work better. Mine aren't beautiful but pretty enough.

Exactly! How about the rings, ring compressors 07954-3000000 those seem nice but pricey for 1 or 2 times usage…

I use hose clamps, with the insides of the little slots all hand-sanded smooth.

TBH they look very similar to the Honda ones that hung on the shadow board in our workshop. They were thick, more than I expected. Oddly I never once used them or the ring compresses, I just used my fingernails to get the rings in the liners or a small flat bladed screwdriver.

I knew a guy who initially worked at a small HD dealer, he went to actual HD school at least once. That dealer closed down and he opened his own full time mostly HD service shop. He had a much loved hose clamp that he used as a ring compressor, it was just BARELY wide enough. Of course the HD he was only doing one piston at a time.
