Digital Gauges, Anyone...?
« on: November 22, 2024, 05:52:05 AM »
Has anybody on here put digital gauges on their bike? I'm right in the middle of rebuilding my '72 CB500/4 and thought a little modern upgrade would be a nice touch. If you have, what did you use?

here are a couple resources. When I need ideas I go to this site and search the type of bike I want and check out the build ideas. I usually find parts or vendors I didn't know about.

motogadget has options for magnetic pick up.

I’ve used MotoGadget gauges on several bikes. Their ChronoClassic is a nice multifunction gauge with info screens you can scroll through but a speedo or tach analog face. They are more expensive than other brands, but the quality is very high.

I have a Vaportech on a bike which replaced a failed speedo. It's compact, has a lot of functions. I don't use all the functions. Too many options. Oldeyes are a problem forv me. I need reading glasses to view some of the options (temp, time, etc...). I miss my larger stock analog gauges which were easy to see with out even looking at them. A nice needle position was easy too see from the corner of my eye. Simple, no clutter. My 500 mod build, I'm keeping the stock gauges. I also have a Acewellgauge sitting on a shelf waiting for a project. They see to be a popular unit. Adaptable to different hub drives.

Analogue gauges are intuitive, digital ones require an extra step in your mind, 'translating' the info. That's why in a dynamic environment analogue has my preference. In a static environment, like when reading resistance, digital will do.

I think in the automotive world the analog needles are driven by stepper motors, and or servo motors. Of course they already have the data from the ECU. For me a gauge that fits into the OEM "feel" that would give me data I do not have otherwise such as real oil pressure, engine cyl head temperature, and oil temperature would be a nice add on.

Agree, except for the speedo. For some reason I find a digital speedo easier.

I put one of these on my vw trike to be a temporary unit while I picked out just the right one…that was $35 and three years ago.  Works great except there is no trip odometer  and the tach doesn’t register till about 1k rpm.  Analog movement of tach pointer, digital readout for speed.  Works so well I stopped looking for the perfect one, this will do fine.

I saw this one on a 750 mod build the other day on fb.
4" combination gauges mounted in a headlight bucket.
A GPS speedometer and electronic tach.

I used speedhut. Quality product that’s fully customizable. You can even upload gauge face graphics. Not cheap but hey nothing good is.
