Topic: 350f camshaft install... shop manual unclear

i just wonder if the camshaft was installed upside down.  no start w/ spark and gas and timing seeming to be good.  anyone care to clarify.  all my manuals are saying is to match up the camchain sprocket lines w/ the top of the cylinders. 

since i have a downloaded manual, perhaps i'm missing something in the details... who knows.

new dyna s as well but, it seemed to be just fine w/ static timing.

bike makes some pretty good backfires while not really trying to start at all.

just took the head off to change the gasket and now i should have just left unbroken not fixed.

I believe it will only go in one way.  Are the tach drive gears matched up?  If so, then it's in right.

upside down meaning... 180 degrees one way or bolt up to the cam chain the other 180 degrees.  i suppose it might not matter but, i'm trying to narrow out all the possibilities.

i actually went back in and flipped it over once already before running it because i wanted to go off of the orientation in the pic but, the pic i can see has it pictured 90 degrees from how it should actually be installed according to the directions. 

i thought everything in the bike was spot on though cuz, i took my time and didn't rush and everything seemed good.  who knows... maybe i will be taking the kawi to paonia this weekend instead, afterall.

As long as you have 1 and 4 at TDC, it doesn't matter which way the cam is turned. When you align the timing mark on the cam, make sure you are pulling up on the front of the cam chain (taking the slack out of the front side). I've had the head off these several times, never a problem. It sounds to me like your issues are with your new ignition, try advancing or retarding it a bit from static and see if you can get it running for a better timing test.


Edit: Just read your earlier post. Did you have the ignition sorted out before you removed the head?

well, gordon came over the other day to help change the gasket and in the process i decided to go the dyna route since i had it laying in a box for the 400 that will be running who knows when.

was thinking the same thing... that i should just go fiddle w/ the timing. 

so, that's where i'll be 




thanks for that jayb... i was thinking it might not matter at all but, i wanted to just get other input to weed that problem out since i thought about it when i was looking at the manual but, you know when you're looking at a hunk of metal sometimes and you're trying to rotate the crankshaft and look at the camshaft and the sprocket to see if it's rotating the same, etc... you say, wow, i'm not sure anymore because i've been out in this garage huffing fumes for days

PO installed the wiring blue/yellow wires opposite of what they are supposed to be when he rebuilt it.  i flip flopped the yellow and blue dyna wires and she started right up.

it's always these AH HA! moments that make me realize MMI was money well spent.

now, just to readvance the timing since that was not the problem
