550 Headlight Replacement Options?
« on: December 08, 2024, 02:43:40 PM »
I need to get a new headlight for my 550; the parts diagram calls for a 7" sealed beam 12-volt 50/40Watt - what are you guys using, and where do I get it? Is the wattage that critical?

It's a controversial topic but the 500/550 may be wattage challenged so I wouldn't go over the factory watts. Look for a motorcycle specific bulb to get a proper light pattern.
I parted out a few bikes over the years and mostly use old headlights. I do like the H4 bulb behind a Bosch lens, Yamiya sells a Cibie and a sweet Marchal headlight if you are looking to upgrade.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

If the factory houseing isn't that important to you they make a few decently cheap ns well performing led outfits with built in turn signals. I can't speak for their longevity though.
They also make 7 in LED bulbs for Harley's  such as

I use a 35W/35W H4 bulb in a "Bosch" lens (Or Hella kit as I have found:  HELLA 002395991 7" H4 Type Single High/Low Beam Headlamp).  Fits the original bucket, plenty bright.  The ability to carry a spare bulb that I can easily change out is a huge advantage over sealed beam.  And takes up less space than housing an entire sealed beam spare.  I have used a 35W/55W H4 bulb with no issues as well, but did not need to use the Hi Beam (55W) often...until my low beam crapped out on my 550 and I had to switch to HI for normal riding until I swapped it out.  Still didn't seem to have an issue, but I have also done enough electrical upgrades to help and I use a good battery.

My CB500K2-ED came with a 60/55 Watts H4 and I never had a charging problem, nor have I ever heard or read a complaint from European riders. Honda continued the charging system from '71 to even the last models in 1978, simply because there were no complaints. The 'charging problem' exists only in this site. I run also 3 Ohm coils. Again: no problem, as long as you use your bike what it was meant for.
Research found that a yellow or a yellowish light offers more safety for bikers.
