Hello from southern California USA
« on: December 09, 2024, 03:49:43 PM »
Hello everyone.

DiscoStu here. First post on the forum and will upload a few pics soon. Joined the forum to learn and to contribute.

Last weekend finally found a CB550 to rebuild with my son who's about to turn 16. It's a '74 CB550K0. Already ordered a Clymer manual. I'm fortunate to have a good local resource nearby if I get into trouble. Charlie's Place in Glendale CA. We plan to return to bike to 100% stock. No plans to cafe this one. That was a condition of the seller too. Ha!  My initial goal is to see if I can get it running first as if feels like there is compression.

In my garage currently I have '22 Honda CRF125F (son), '21 KTM 300XC-W, '06 Honda VFR800 (3rd Viffer), '23 Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally...and of course now the '74 Honda CB550 (not running yet).

Anyways just wanted to introduce myself.

Later guys

Welcome from snowy Minnesota,

The 550 can do some serious miles, like a 1000 in less than 24 hours.

Welcome from sunny but chilly southern Arizona!
Avoid parts from 4-into-1, ask before purchasing stuff on various suppliers... and Honda control cables are excellent and superior to aftermarket. Order from South Sound Honda of Olympia WA for good prices on OEM parts at discount and reasonable shipping charges.
74-76 cb550 have wear issue in rocker arm cover where you get eccentric wear in the cover from the rocker shafts, this makes it impossible to get consistent valve lash with wear and destroys cam and rocker arms along with the cover, that the one weakness,... other than brake performance being typical 70s Honda. The 77-78 top cover pinned the shafts eliminating this issue. Just be aware, easy to check for this wear...
Congrats on purchase, 550s are a great bike...more fun because of the nimble handling. Nice original examples are getting rarer, so glad you are keeping it original.
