K4 starter gear bushing
« on: December 15, 2024, 06:15:51 AM »
Assembling my crankcases I noticed a crankshaft hole lubes the starter gear bushing, which is stationary while running. Has this bushing, seal and side clearance been known to possibly affect oil pressure? Just an observation. Thanks, JR

I'm not sure, I have never looked at this detail.
Others here know far more than I do.

It's not a known issue that I'm aware of. Of course, an engineering theorist may be able to construct a scenario in which it's a problem.
I know some drag racers have removed the starter and flywheel which left the oil path open to spray whatever it can with no noticeable damage.
Those bikes aren't usually highway cruising except one I have, the bike was a locally famous drag racer / street hero and bar hopper ride. It did have a scuffed #4 cylinder but was also a 72mm bore with a stroker crank and OK looking bearings.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
