An Overdue Introduction
« on: December 23, 2024, 09:54:33 AM »
Hey Y'all, Greetings from Salt Lake City, Utah

I have frequented this forum for the past 8 years, searching many SOHC4 problems and discussions. I am very grateful for this forum and all the helpful folks on it.

I figure some of you may get a kick out of my bikes. I will keep this post to just the working SOHC4 bikes, but I tend to buy old Hondas faster than I can fix them(some call it a problem, I call it a collection).

This is my 1978 CB750K named Nadira, It was the first SOHC4 bike I ever bought. I drove 3 hours up to Idaho Falls to pick this bike up for $700 when I was 16. When I got it, the tank was powder-coated sea foam green, it had clubman bars, seized front brake, gummed up carbs, and no side covers. It has played the unfortunate role as my guinea pig to learn on. It has experienced such traumas as: running on only main jets while the idles were completely clogged, experiencing minor oil starvation for multiple weeks, losing a valve adjuster nut in the head while riding up a canyon, T-boning a car at 35mph, and much more. Currently I am in the process of piecing humpty dumpty back together with a little help from 2 other parts bikes.

Here are my 1973 CB350F named Roxy(newest acquisition), and 1977 CB550F named Nova. The CB550F was traded for a 1974 CB360T in fire truck red. It sat many years in a ranchers barn before being traded for a bull whip by a friend of mine. It needed a top end refresh, and decent carb jetting, but overall is one of the least problematic bikes I've ever owned. Next up for the 550 is a seat re-cover, and new clutch basket and plates. The CB350F is my latest fascination, I've wanted one for years but haven't found one in decent condition for the right price until this past October. All four exhausts were rusted in half and needed to be patched back together with some very delicate welding. The valve clearances were set at 0.2" instead of 0.002"(no this is not an exaggeration, the engine sounded like it was going to explode when I bought it). I'm just now learning that the #4 carb is actually a #3 carb off ebay that the previous owner epoxied and dremeled to make fit.  Despite the quirks, this has actually been my favorite street bike I've ever owned or ridden. There is nothing like hitting 10K red line on every commute and never getting a speeding ticket. Next I will be dialing in the jetting for altitude, replacing the chain and sprockets for a slightly shorted gearing, and futzing with the suspension to get it less bouncy.

If you have any questions about these bikes or anything else I'd love to hear them. I've always considered starting a project threads for all these old bikes or making videos, but haven't found the motivation.

I would also love to see y'all's CB350F's in the comments, I never see enough of them around.

Welcome! Looks like you have all the bases covered. You need a 400F; it’s an excellent combo of all your bikes, with a 6 speed trans!

I had no Idea the CB400's had 6-speeds. Now you've made me want one!

I love the matching colors on those 3 bikes, really feels like a set!

Great collection! It sounds like you have a tough 750. :)
Yep the 350F has long been my favorite, too. Sochiro felt that way and bought one himself! I've just never had one to ride unless it was someone else's loaned to me while I rebuilt it for them. I have one (or about 85% of one) in the shed, hoping for a summer with no other must-do projects ahead of it to bring it back to life. Got all the parts, just need the time!

It's good news that your 750 met the car without you getting really hurt(?). The K8 makes a great touring bike, especially if the rear sprocket loses a couple (or few) teeth to drop its revs today. In its time it only had to run 55 MPH all day but could do more: today Honda's choice of gearing for the 1970s can be improved upon, and the engine can do it without breaking a sweat. ;)
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

The demons are repulsed when a man does good. Use that.
Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

I keep telling people that the 350F is the perfect mix between small Honda twin, and bigger soch4's. Soichiro was not wrong on this one!

I survived the accident with only a scraped knee and a headache thankfully. The bike didn't fair so well, bent forks, bent frame, and generally just mangled front end. After an ebay rebuild, it then got backed into by a bus while parked. The bike has now been paid out a couple times over by insurance. I have found 2 other CB750 part bikes in which i plan to make one or two functional bikes from.

You're definitely right on the gearing, these bikes have a ton of mid-range torque!

Welcome aboard the forum from southern NH
I've thought about having a collection of the sohc Fours beyond the multiple 750s I have but I'm outta room. I rode all of them back in the 70s while I was parts manager and had access to them(test ride bikes the shop had) to make a parts run on.

I don't think anyone can blame you for favoring 750's, I've never owned a more durable or reliable bike than my 750. I'm jealous you got to test ride just about every 70s Honda under the sun it sounds like. I don't think i could've chosen just one to buy if i were you.
