Front sprocket question
« on: December 28, 2024, 06:46:53 PM »
On my 1977 Honda CB 750F, I've noticed the front sprocket being held by a single bolt with correct flat washer has some play on the output shaft. Enough I can wiggle it around a bit and rotate the sprocket on the the shaft backwards and forwards a small amount. The sprocket is brand new 15 tooth. The original 14 tooth was the same as far as play goes. Should I worry about this or is it considered normal? 18k miles on bike with 630 chain. Thanks for the knowledge and help.

I think 15 teeth was stock? The new sprocket should be flat on one side, and raised on the other side. What does yours look like?

New Honda one are usually tighter than new aftermarket ones..
Some used Honda’s are still tighter than aftermarket’s…🤪

This is what the correct 15 tooth 630 sprocket looks like on the counter shaft; notice that the end of the shaft is about flush with the surface of the sprocket; if the end of the shaft sticks out past the sprocket, the sprocket is too thin. NOTE: the raised side of the sprocket is supposed to face inwards, not outwards like in the pic.

Oh damn the raised portion of my sprocket has been facing outwards since I've owned it. 3 years now and about 3k miles put on. But if the correct way is inwards I'll flip it around and try that. But should I have any play? I had a very thin washer made up that allows the sprocket to fit tight and it does, it's just that it's on backwards haha. Thanks for the heads up!

Actually Scottly, stock front sprocket is 14 teeth, rear is 43. Going to a 15 dropped my hwy rpm about 500. I've been to 80mph once on this bike lol. I'm an older guy and have no need for speed any more.

As to the play, that is normal to have a bit of play.
You asked that on fb?

A little bit of freeplay is normal. Raised shoulder facing in.
