Singing in the rain...
« on: March 21, 2007, 05:19:44 PM »
Well, swearing actually.  I should have known better than to trust the weatherman.  It was bright & sunny on the way into work this morning.  A bit of a chill at 22 deg.(F), but it does clear up the sinuses.  Warmed up into the high 40's as predicted though.  The rain was supposed to hold off until tonight; maybe someone forgot to tell Ma Nature about daylight savings time?  Started to sprinkle at 3, and by the time 5 o'clock hit, was coming down much closer to a steady rain, albeit not a downpour.  Just enough to get the roads all wet, but not wash off the grime & oily crud.  And no rain gear with me (yes, living on the edge).  The steady rain waited until I was half-way home, of course.  Between the backwash from the cars in front and the rain from above, it was a wet & miserable run.  I recall my thoughts about a big turn in a 4-lane road "hmmm, take the outside lane so if I wipe out, I'll slide into the ditch and not under the truck next to me...".  The bike performed flawlessly, even with the cork gasket not properly sealing my points cover.  Besides being quite wet, no problems until I actually got home and came in the door.  My wife thinks I should have my head examined.  It was my first real wet drive - I avoid riding in the rain if at all possible.  I always worried about riding in the rain, so this has taken some of the mystery out of it.  I know now to not let my eagerness to ride overcome my instinct to take the truck.

That brings back memories.
Commuted to work on the 550 for 20 years.  The metric was; ride the Honda as long as I don't get wet on the way *to* work.  Riding wet is no big deal once you learn to compensate and are prepared for it.  Spending all day wet was not acceptable, though.  So, the rationale was that if home was the goal, there are clean dry clothes there and a quick change put things aright quite quickly.  Just keep the leather conditioned beforehand and it sheds water nicely.  Bike doesn't care about water, though the front brake has to be ridden to keep it warm and water shed to have any effectiveness.  Then the rear drum provides most of the braking force, speeds and vehicle spacing adjusted accordingly. The big Vetter fairing paid for itself many times over during the winter rainy season. The "stylish" bikers ridiculed the Vetter on the "small" bike.  But, their bikes sat in the garage way more than mine did.  There was little question about who was wimpier.

The wife got all worried and concerned about rain the first couple of years.  But, got used to it.

Totally agree with the dry to work and wet home concept.  But I'd rather be dry both ways.  My riding jacket is textile, so it shed the water pretty good and kept me dry.  My pants were regular cotton, so they got good & soaked.  I was surprised to see (or not!) how crappy my faceshield got.  A lot of dirty water all over that did not get swept away by the wind as I thought it would - it just sat there & collected.  I figured wiping it with my leather glove would make things worse, something I eventually proved when it got really bad.  I don't have a vetter, but my little windscreen deflected an awful lot of water away from my chest.  Must say that I didn't see any other bikers out today - so am I "less wimpy" or "more stupid"?  (Leaning toward stupid).  I'm still in the "first couple of years" riding stage, so I guess she still has the right to question my mentality.

A daily commute is another story.  I was told flat out by the senior partners that it's un-becoming of a 'young' & un-and-coming partner in the firm to be riding a bike to work every day.  I'm supposed to keep it to a special day here and there, maybe every Friday or something like that.  Supposedly I lose credibility and my ability to manage the troops by riding a bike.  And here I was laboring under the delusion for the last 20+ years that it's really ability, dedication and a passion for your profession that builds leadership & character, when all I really needed was to chose the right vehicle to drive to work.  I suspect they didn't see the humor in my choice of vehicle today.
