Topic: Honda CB750 K2 replacement fenders

My CB750 K2 fenders are showing their age - really look terrible - both front and rear.    Dents, dings, rust, and holes.  I've been looking online and there are a number of options.  New fenders from Vietnam. Also new fenders from Thailand but might be the same as the ones from Vietnam - this would save me from high import duties and shipping. Both sellers also sell the rear fender so I am quessing that they will be matching look and quality of chrome.   I also see original fenders online (both front and rear) from the USA.  Some used that are available really do not look very good - no point buying replacements that also look bad.  I have seen some that look to be in great shape with a higher price.  As my CB750 will never be a show bike non-original parts or originals with slight wear would be OK with me.

I have included prices but the shipping from Vietnam and USA will be much higher in addition to a 10% import tax and 7% value added tax.  As I live in Thailand there would be no tax and minimum shipping cost from the Thailand seller

After looking closer at the available reproduction fenders and original fenders you start to see very small details and differences (perhaps minor and insignificant).  There is a small indented area of the original fenders where the mounting brackets are attached.  The reproduction fenders do not have this detail.

The fenders from vietnam are ok, chrome not as nice as original.
Yamiya fenders are high quality, chrome like original, more expensive.

I just checked and Yamiya has the original Honda front fender priced at 109,000 Yen or $693 USD (ouch)

They also have a reproduction fender priced at 54,000 yen or $343

The photos from the Thailand seller are small and blurry and show very little detail.  Not very reasurring. The Vietnam fender will still need to be shpped for $70 plus import duty and VAT.  The US Seller of the K1 Fender just messaged me with a very detailed condition report and a very good offer which I am considering. I am a little concerned about new replacement parts being too bright and shiney and might look out of place with the rest of the bike?  My original goal was to get the bike running well and looking better - but not a show bike.  I'm starting to  believe that original 50 year old chrome that has slightly dulled over time (but not rusted or dented like my fenders) might suit this bike better than new??  Not really sure.

I already bought New Old Stock mirrors for the bike and the new shiney chrome looks fantastic?

Here is a rear fender I am looking at.  According to the seller the fender was removed from a 1974 CB750.  Was used for a few thousand miles then taken off when bike was turned into a café racer. Has sat on the shelf ever since.

Another possibility if I go with original is I can always polish the chrome up a little if it is too dull??

For me the old style chrome fenders are one of the design highlights of the Honda CB lineup. High quality and give the bike a distinctive vintage look and feel.  Not the biggest or boldest fenders but more 70's sleek and modern.   The aerodynamic tail light holder is so cool!

If this was my bike and did not want to go crazy with super expensive parts, I would replace all rusty parts with good, used Honda parts if not doing a full restoration.  But you being in Thailand, not as easy as here in the States, so it's a decision that you are going to make.

As far as the tail light, it appears smaller than the one on the replacement fender you are considering.  U.S bikes had the smaller tail light thru K1, then it was larger [and safer, easier to see]

CB owners in the USA are really in a wonderful position to restore these old bikes.  Excellent selection of New Honda parts,  plentiful amount of used parts, and many choices with reproduction parts. The previous owner of the bike originally wanted to restore the bike but just did not have access or know where to buy the parts.  He was actually glad to hear I was an American as he immediately responded  that USA is the best place to "buy parts".  Just too expensive for him so that is why he sold the bike "as-is".  I'm sure many people buy these project bikes with the best of intentions and they sit for a very long time.   

Late Edit:  I'm preparing and consolidating a shipment of parts from the USA (about 20 items) including the Hondaman CB750 book.  My shipping consolidation service in the USA does an excellent job repacking all the individual shipments into 1 package and then ships to me in Thailand.

Why not clean up your parts? Use a good chrome cleaner such as Solvo Autosol and a ver fine wire wool. I think you might be surprised at the results.

The rust on the fenders is severe with holes visible so they definitely need to be replaced.  I do plan on using Autosol metal polish on other parts. At this point  I will most likely be replacing the exhaust pipes so no need to polish them. I will probably go ahead and polish the engine covers but not the engine itself (looks like an enormous amount of work with all the fins).

The worst rust is on the rear fender toward the seat.  I can't wait to remove this rusted junk and throw it away!

I just noticed the seat hinge pin is coming out.  I just pushed it back in.  It has a drilled hole on the other end so I assume a removable cotter pin goes there to keep the pin in place?  Better to learn this now rather than have the seat fall off when riding the bike
