  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Happy New Year! Folks, as discussed in the previous threads, this thread is not just to remember Frank, but also to share his New Years Resolution to get off our butts and ride more. A lot of us are getting older and we're carrying a few aches and pains, and sometimes it's easier to talk about riding than actually doing it, so it's important to get out there and get some miles under our tyres.

It's good for our bikes too, bikes that aren't ridden often tend to slowly self destruct, I'm currently in the process of revitalising several of my bikes that I've ignored for too long, so riding your bike, as opposed to parking it under a dust sheet and just bullsh1tting everyone about it, is actually good for your bikes too.

The rules were changed in 2022 to be a bit more inclusive. 1. To post in this thread, the ride you're posting must be a minimum of 50 miles. 50 miles isn't hard, we can all get out and do that, and it'll give our oil a chance to get warm, recharge our batteries (both the bikes, and ours) and burn off any condensation inside our engines and pipes. 2. This thread is no longer restricted to just SOHC4's. A lot of us have bikes other than SOHC4's that we like to ride, and take pics of, so it'll be good to be able to post here, and I for one will enjoy looking at pics of other bikes that you own, out on the road. 3. You can only claim one ride in one day, regardless of how many miles you do. (the more the better)

A new rule in 2024 was that you must post your rides within one week of the ride, no diary entries from 6 months ago will be accepted. Sometimes we can't post our rides on the same day, but a week should be long enough for everyone. Like previous years though, if you've posted your rides for 2025 in other threads, you're welcome to cut and paste them into this one. Also, keep a tally of how many rides you've done, it's not our job to keep a score for each participant. Kevin went above and beyond and did, but he shouldn't have to.

Apart from the above, this thread is all about getting off our comfy chairs and back onto our bikes, and enjoying some two wheeled exploring. We have a "clique" of riders here who really try hard to do their rides every year, and I hope that even more members here, from as many places around the globe, will participate and post pics of your bikes, your scenery, your riding buddies, what you're eating and drinking (in moderation, of course) and how you're enjoying your favourite hobby. Remember, 50 miles is the minimum, no speedo readings are necessary, we're all adults, and of course if you want to ride more than 50, well that's even better.

There will be an award (TBA) for the first rider to do 24 rides, and possibly some small trinket for each participant that completes their 25 rides, also TBA. For the last couple of years Bud made some fantastic keyrings to commemorate Frank's legacy and reward folks for making the effort, and Kevin mailed them all over the world, so hopefully we'll come up with something again this year.

I stole this pic from Frank's memorial thread, it shows Frank doing what he was promising himself that he'd try do more of when he started this thread in 2020, getting out as often as he could and enjoying riding his bikes. Let's all continue to get out there as often as we can in 2025, and just enjoy the ride!

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Sorry for just cutting and pasting last year's blurb, but I think it covers everything pretty clearly, so couldn't see much point in changing anything but the dates.

Anyhoo, yesterday (Jan 3) I knew it was gonna be hot (in the 90's and maybe over 100) this weekend, so I left earlier than normal so that I could get home before it got too hot. I'm quite enjoying riding the KZ750, so jumped on it, and headed north. Even though a lot of folks are on their annual holidays the freeway was moving very slowly so I got off as early as I could and headed east to Whittlesea, then west to Wandong, where I stopped to take a pic.

I jumped back on, and had a great ride to Broadford, where I stopped for a smoke and took another pic.

Kawasaki KZ750 Friday 3 January 2025 4 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The green Kawasaki was in it's element, just cruising along with no particular place to go, the warm air was keeping my arthritis at bay, and apart from a couple of sneaky potholes, my back didn't suffer too badly. The KZ isn't too vibey (compared to a Yamaha XS650, it's as smooth as silk) but seems happier at 3500 RPM (55 MPH in 5th gear) than 3750 RPM @ 60 MPH, so as it has a ton of torque, I think I'll install a one or two tooth larger front sprocket so I can cruise along at 60-70 MPH at 3500 RPM. It also runs smoothest with 98 RON fuel which surprised me, as it's not a particularly high compression engine. Good thing is that the fuel economy is excellent, so the few extra cents per litre of 98 RON fuel won't break the bank.

All up I did 97.6 miles and was going to ride a bit further to clock over 100 miles but the traffic on the freeway coming back into Melbourne came to a halt, so I took the first exit and rode back to the storage unit. It was a great ride, and I'm looking forwards to Monday when we'll be back in the mid to high 70's, I don't want to ride on really hot days as I'll be tempted to not wear my jacket and risk removing a few layers of skin if I come off. Anyway, ride #1 for 2025 is done, and was most enjoyable. ;D

Well Terry, here I'm reading this start up of 25 rides in 2025, in my comfy chair,  28°F outside after a high of 35° today before the wind chill factor.....and sick almost as a dog with a head cold and a dry cough  argggg. So I'll trudge through reading and try to get some relief of my PMS winter blues. Keep on riding.

After a few errands, I did some rearranging in my shop today for a bit until I ran out of steam, trying to get some order back from the caos after changing out the tool boxes the past couple of weeks. Still more to get arranged before I can get some work done on the projects.
And I pulled the sheet dust cover off for the pictures Terry....

Saturday forecast for me is high of 22F, Sunday is high of 26F but that is 4pm. Nothing nicer in the near future for my area.

I think that was only the third or fourth trip on the KZ750 and the longest so far Bill. It only has a 14.5 litre (3.9 US Gallon) tank, and I didn't need to go to reserve after almost 100 miles. Next time I fill it up I'll work out the MPG, Google say's it's around 46 MPG (US gallon) so probably over 50 miles per Imperial Gallon, which is great. On my last rides on my CB750 K0, I was able to do over 100 miles without switching to reserve, but I wasn't thrashing it. ;D

I ran the CB750K2 to reserve just to find it, I do not remember exactly...in the actual 70's and 80's and E0 gasoline hitting reserve could leave you sitting by the side of the road ;-).

Very cool, Terry.  I have no idea what this year will bring, but I have hopes to ride again.  Feels strange not to have a motorcycle to ride.

I have been under the weather since Christmas Eve and despite yesterday afternoon being 85f I wasn’t up for a ride. Not sure if I will make it out today , suppose to reach 74f this afternoon and cool down as a front moves through northern AZ the next few days. Not sure if I have the energy for much of a trip….  May see some snow in higher elevations and rain in valley this coming week. Been beyond bone dry so we will take all the precipitation Mother Nature will give us!

Hey Bud, not sure how it is in Texas, but around here, Craig's List is usually full of inexpensive bikes.  It's easy enough to pick up something interesting for pocket change, have some fun with it and then turn it around sometimes even making a modest profit.

Just a thought while your considering your long-term plans.   ;)

Valid point.  I forgot about Craigslist.  I've been looking on Facebook Marketplace and Cycle Trader.  Gonna go check out Craigslist.  Thanks for the reminder.

Wish I could say I did my first ride this year but this week has been anything but nice. Today it is -6 c and blowing and snowing. Got a ride in on my tractor to blow out the drifts on the driveway but that was it. Much envy Terry! Nice bike too!

Ride #1 for 25 in 2025.
EXCELLENT Terry
Something months away for me.
Nice photos too, you have a knack for posing your motorcycle.
Your photos are consistently good.

My reserve comes on about 160 miles. I’m very careful filling the tank, I don’t want to spill any.
Bike on sidestand, I raise the fuel level with pump on slow until it touches the neck.
I rarely ride 160 miles a day so it doesn’t ever get to reserve.

It was another beautiful day yesterday, so I did some work on the VTR1000F and took it for a quick lap, then decided to go for a longer ride. I'd forgotten that I had a telehealth appointment for 3pm, so as it was around 12.30, I had to take a shorter ride, to be back home in time for the appointment.

I rolled the K0 out of the storage unit and hit the button, but the battery was a bit flat, so I had to kick start it. (not an easy task, as the compression on this thing is enormous with the high comp pistons I installed when I built the engine) Anyway, it started after 3 or 4 kicks, and I rode to the gas station and filled it. Once again I had to kick start it, but it started on the first kick, so that was good. I took off up the freeway assuming that the alternator would charge the battery as I rode along, but the blinkers were really weak, so either the battery isn't taking a charge, ot the stator or rec/reg is toast.

No biggie, the bike was running great, and I really enjoyed riding my favourite backroads which was pretty much devoid of traffic. I stopped to take a quick pic, but left the engine running so I wouldn't have to kick start it again.

K0 Tuesday 7 January 2025 2 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

It idled quite happily right up to when I was about a yard from it, and then conked out. No biggie, it started with the first kick, and I took off again. After around 40 miles, it started to run out of puff. It was happy enough to sit on 60 MPH, but if I went to accelerate it wouldn't do much. By this time my anxiety was starting to peak, and all I wanted to do was get it home. I got off the freeway onto the road where my storage unit is located, and it conked out, so I rolled as far as I could, then stopped a couple of miles short. I lifted the seat and could see that the battery connections were tight, so I closed the seat again and turned the ignition back on and there was a glimmer of light in the oil pressure light, so I tried kick starting it again, and it fired right up. I took off again and rode past the storage place to the intersection where I had to do a U turn to go to the storage place (wide/high median strip so couldn't just ride over it) and it conked out again.

Bugger. This time the idiot lights didn't come on at all, so I pushed it uphill around half a mile back to the storage place. To say I was pooped is an understatement, while my anxiety had increased my adrenalin and the bike wasn't that hard to push, it was a warm day and I was probably a little dehydrated, and my pulse was probably thru the roof. Regardless, I got it back to the storage unit after 55 miles running on the battery alone. I didn't have time to diagnose the fault, but I remembered that one of the AC wires from the alternator had a pretty crappy connection when Spotty and I put the engine back in the frame, so I'm guessing (but don't know for sure) that it's the problem.

Another nice day today, so I think I'll go for a ride on the green Kawasaki, and hopefully it'll be a bit less exciting than yesterday. ;D

Looks like a beautiful day for a ride Terry, sorry the bike wasn't cooperating.  It's nice here too if you like freezing temperatures and lots of snow LOL  Forecast is calling for more snow Friday & Monday with temps below freezing until Friday the 17th.

More photos of the sunny south please...  Lol

Well I was still a bit sore after pushing the K0 the last half mile home on Tuesday, so didn't go for a ride on Wednesday, but got out yesterday for an almost trouble free ride #3 yesterday. I say "almost" because I forgot to take the hairspray over to the storage place to glue the throttle grip to the tube, so as soon as I was on the freeway, the grip started to slide off. I got off the freeway and stopped at a shopping centre and bought a tube of rubber glue at a discount store, and glued it on. I was looking around for somewhere to eat while the glue dried, but all I could see was a sushi place (not a fan) or Subway (don't mind it, but not for breakfast) or a donut shop. (not a big fan) I gave up and wandered back out to the bike, and the grip felt firmer, so took off again.

Sadly the glue hadn't dried, so I spent the rest of the ride banging the grip back on, but apart from that, the bike went flawlessly. The engine is remarkably smooth, but it does have an annoying vibe around 4-4500 RPM, which is the 60-70 MPH area that I like to ride in, so I'm thinking about fitting a larger front sprocket to move the vibe point. Regardless, it's a lovely thing to ride, and I was surprised that when I filled it after 97 miles it was averaging around 53 MPG (Imperial gallons = 4.5 litres) which is about the same as my Harley Sportster and the son's Royal Enfield 650 twin. I stopped to take a pic or two.

I continued on to Kilmore and stopped at my favourite cafe, and had a couple of dim sims and a sarsaparilla for lunch.

I had to be home before 3pm as Spotty and I had some work to do on the Ducati. I was happy to take my 35 year old leather jacket off as it was in the high 80's by the time I got home. All up, I'd done 103 miles, and still hadn't hit reserve, So I'm pretty happy with the bike all up. Still thinking about selling it though, I need to reduce the herd by the end of the year when I retire, so might send it to a bike auction and see if it sells. I'd miss it, if I didn't have so many other bikes that I like too. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well done Terry. Maybe the K0 just needs a fresh battery? It was almost 0 degrees F here a few nights ago and more snow tonight! Will be another three months before I’ll even think about a ride….

We’re headed to an island off Honduras for 10 days at the end of the month. I see they rent scooters so may do three or four laps of the island to get #1 done?

Thanks John, I put the battery on the charger for a couple of days and it appears to be good so next time I go over to the storage unit I’ll install it and fire it up and I’ll attach my multi meter to it and see if the charging circuit is working.

I’m thinking that it’s either the rec/reg (which are usually pretty reliable) or if there’s a bad connection from the alternator. No biggie, I’ve got several of each in my parts hoard. It’s a cheap lead acid battery so I think I’ll put it into the Kawasaki and put the Motobatt back into the K0 so I don’t end up spilling acid on my new Yamiya pipes. ;D

Thanks John, the Kawasaki has a 2 into 1 exhaust which exits on the right side of the bike, so no chance of acid overflowing onto the pipe. Plus I’ll probably sell the Kawasaki to raise funds to finish my ‘69 H1 project so I’d rather keep the good Motobatt for the K0. ;D

Well we seem to be getting off to a slow start this year, and Terry is the only one riding. I sure like getting a paycheck since going back to work, but it is really cutting into my ride time. It has beenin the low 40's to high 30's here when it's time to leave for work, I know I'm a wus. Plus even though it is 55 miles one way, I don't think that in the spirit of this challenge commuting isn't what Frank had in mind when he started this. I am typing this one Thursday night and trying to maybe get a run in on Sunday, just so Terry doesn't feel lonely. We shall see.

To think I stopped going to San Diego for the winter's 3 years ago. 69° F there yesterday......and fires happening....
7" snow in New Orleans yesterday! 26°F!!
Cold in TX too.
