Do I need a steering damper?? Cb550k
« on: March 21, 2007, 06:20:46 PM »

I have a 1976 CB550k I ride to work everyday(22 miles freeway). The bike has tapered bearings and Progressive springs(firm).

Some parts of the freeway are laid with concrete, this kind of road usually has lines or other crap. I ride at 60-85 MPH, it's on the concrete that I feel my front wheel wobble, when I change lanes. I hit a few marker bumps, the wobble happens and I slow down. On asphalt, it's not so bad. But it's still there.

Now do you think if I get a steering damper, this might help eliminate some of the wobble?

Don't try to hide the problem,..find out what is causing it.

Do a search for wobbles, it has been covered several times.

The damper will probably mask the real problem(s), like mismatched tires, uneven tire wear, incorrect tire pressure, head bearing issues, etc.  I would rule those things out first.

Do you have a ribbed tread pattern on the front tire? It will give an uneasy weaving feeling on grooved pavement or metal grating.
