Replacing wheels and exhaust pipes for Honda CB750
« on: January 14, 2025, 06:35:47 PM »
The wheels on my CB750 need to be replaced with extensive rust throughout.  Searching for replacements and Yamiya in Japan has a set of DID rims/wheels (front and rear) for 20,000 yen for the set of 2 or $130. IMO good looking wheels at a  reasonable price.   Shipping Weight is  10.113 kg so shipping cost is expensive at 20,000 yen $130.  Total cost is $260 for the set of 2 plus import duties.

https://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=829

Please let me know if you have any experience with the Yamiya DID wheels.  Also is there a spoke set that is recommended for these wheels?

You can compare pricing at vintagecb750, that's where I got 3 D.I.D rims (1 for the 750 and 2 for the 550).

https://vintagecb750.com/collections/rims-spokes-wheel-seals-tire-valve-stems/products/rear-stock-type-rim-73-1076

Spoke kits can be had there as well, unless you want to pay more $$$ and go with stainless, just depends on what you are trying to do.  I just went with standard plating.

Right now my main focus is getting the bike fixed and back on the road but I am still waiting for parts to arrive.  Cosmetics are not the priority but there are many cosmetic parts that absolutely need to be replaced.   So I thought while waiting  why not order parts  now  so they are here and ready to install when the time comes. I'm not the best at project planning and I am sure that delays are inevitable.

I'm quessing stainless spokes would be better in a hot and humid climate like Thailand but I think spokes with standard plating would be fine and would match the wheels?? Thanks!

The Yamiya website states:

A set of the front and rear wheels. Made by DAIDO (D.I.D)

CB750K RIM SET, WHEEL (D.I.D) / 8714.10
   12 (F-7.Front wheel)
18 (F-20.Rear wheel,Driven sprocket)
Yamiya Number: AS044
Shipping Weight: 10113g
Manufactured by: DAIDO (D.I.D)
Part No:44701300013
42701300013

¥20,000 (excl VAT)

Is the price for the set (2 wheels - both front and rear) or just 1 wheel?

When trying to order Yamiya has the following:

CB750K RIM SET, WHEEL (D.I.D) / 8714.10

and shows both wheels (front and rear).  I can not find any place in their ordering system where you can  order each separate wheel.

This will be my first time ordering from Yamiya and I sent an email to the owner as I am baffled? If the price is only for 1 wheel then maybe input a quantity of 2 where each wheel is the same price?

Sorry It would help to have links but I didn't read carefully, Set would imply 2 and yes I would say that is a good deal, even with the shipping charges being equal. I didn't go look up on Yamiya's site...
Disregard my input.

Having seen Buchanan's prices I figured it was per rim...boy are they expensive.

Or these, https://z1parts.net/front-rear-rims-for-vintage-z1-kz-h2-h1-kh-cb/

Very good price on the DID wheels at Z1.  With shipping from Japan to Thailand the Yamiya price is coming out to be $80 less than the Z1 price plus shipping from USA to Thailand.

Anything from Yamiya is of the best quality. Their packing and mailing service is also excellent. Given your location, I would order from them every chance you get.

I ordered the wheels and spokes from Yamiya today - my very first order. I see that Yamiya has an excellent reputation from forum members and I will be looking at their available parts first whenever I am starting a new parts search.  From my experience shipping from Japan to Thailand is incredibly fast but in my case there really is no hurry.  At this point I am just buying and stockpiling parts that I know will be needing.  Right now the $USD is very high and the Japanese ¥Yen is low so better to buy now with a favorable exchange rate.

Yes the price is very good.

BTW, go to your profile and change your location so there isn't any confusing replies to getting parts.

Slightly off topic but this set of pipes showed up for sale in the USA.  Pipes are used but IMO look pretty good. I will be needing better pipes but shipping will be expensive.

Did you look at Yamiya pipes? $1600 for their set of no number 300 pipes.

Edit.
Those pipes from the US are 341 pipes. They don't breath as easy and are quieter than the 300 pipes.

The pipes on my bike are 341 but I would prefer the 300 if the change would not disrupt or alter the performance of the engine or carbs??

You might need bigger main jets depending on what are I'm your carbs. A plug chop once on the road will reveal how the plugs are burning.
What year is your bike?

You have a very good memory. 3 out of 4 of the pipes are in pretty good condition with some surface rust and pitting and the diffusers are rusted out and need to be replaced which I can buy at Yamiya.  The number 2 pipe has extensive rust and definitely needs to be replaced.  Yamiya is currently selling a Number 2 reproduction no number pipe for 50,000 Yen or  $320 and also has a Number 2 pipe with a slight defect for 25,000 Yen or $160.  IMO both good prices for a separate pipe. So there is a possibility the pipes will clean up and I can purchase 1 pipe separately.  Obviously the new chrome pipe will stand out from the others but the price spent would be minimal. This bike will never be a show bike so I am trying to keep restoration costs down to a minimum.

Number 2 pipe with defect?

https://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_251_142_88&products_id=4246

341 diffusers

https://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=246_251_142_88&products_id=413

I am inspecting the pipes now and will be experimenting with cleaning and polishing the chrome pipes later today.  Starting with WD-40 and 0000 steel wool to remove the surface rust and then finish with autosol metal polish.  If the 3 pipes polish up nicely I will then turn my attention to replacing the Number 2 pipe.

Also just to confirm.  The number 2 pipe is the second pipe starting from the left.  Number 1 is left top (with heat shield), Number 2 is left bottom, Number 3 is right bottom, Number 4 is right top (with heat shield)
