new front brake kit assembly
« on: January 18, 2025, 05:15:29 AM »
Hello all,  first post here !   I have perused the forum and not found an example of my query; some older posts make some comments.   Me :  63 yo Alabama redneck who wrenched on aircraft for a career, and do alot of my maintenance on diff bikes over the years.  Current Bike :  1977 CB400 Four SS.    Dad's bike ( one of many) with 2605 original miles; in our family since 1985.   Kept stored inside and running.  The front brake had seized up and was removed, and unfortunately misplaced;  bike relocated from Virginia to Texas over the holidays.  Ordered a new kit;   I know to grease the inner rubber seal ring, groove,  piston, and wall.   Question :  the kit came with a smaller white plastic washer, about 1" diameter.  No tech drawings show this in parts diagram for my bike, so can I presume that it's not needed ?  Possibly fits behind the inner stationary pad ?  I read some posts that the pads will bind if this is installed.   Thanks in advance,  heading out on a service call,  will check forum replies asap.  "  Ride safe and watch the idiots"

As far as I know the 400f has a brake system that is identical to the 750 system. I can't recall any such parts, perhaps a photo for folks to look at?
I could be wrong of course.

Welcome aboard the forum David
From your words I'm assuming you're talking about the brake caliper only?
Where did you buy the kit from? Do you have pictures of the kit you got and the washer? Is it flat or does it have a raised shoulder to it?

BTW the 400 is a fun bike to run around on.

It fits between the pad and the piston.

It's suppose to eliminate squeal.

0oh. btw, welcome to the forum.....

Thanks guys,  entire kit purchased at 4into1 in Hayward, Cali.    Attaching pics,   so it's the flat white washer and I will try install it between pad and piston,  seems to fit.   I prolly won'y get to it today but will update after reassembly and bleed.     And yes,  a "super" fun bike to ride.  My dad owned all 3 years at one time, a red and a blue and this maroon (75-76-77)   We both graduated to more CC's over the years, his last bike before passing was an ST1100.  I am currently on a K1600 GTL.

Be careful with that.  I have not used any brake parts from 4 into 1, but virtually everything else I have purchased from them was unuseable due to quality or incorrect fitment issues.  I have heard of 4 into 1's calipers being useable.  I have attempted to use cheap chinese master cylinders sold on Amazon that performed unacceptably, so that stuff is out there.  Don't be tempted to try it.  It's false economy, especially when dealing with brakes.  Fortunately, sohc calipers are stone axe simple...not much to get wrong.
If it works good, it looks good...
