I got a deal, nope.
« on: January 23, 2025, 05:13:41 PM »
I saw a marketplace ad for a pair of 72mm Alcoa / MTC stroker pistons that look like my set of three. We drove 45 minutes to meet up, I got pair of 72mm alcoa pistons with the same pin location and compression height and look good, a pair of nice cam towers, and a smoking hot web cam the guy raced with.
It was cold out, we met at the gas station, did the deal and had some unusual good pizza on the way home.
Now I'm home and realize it needed a #2 or #4 piston and got a #1 and #3 Fudge, but I didn't say fudge. The cam appears stock, no numbers anywhere except a #9 core, cast in F and I. .290 intake lift.
The bottom line is, don't go when it's really cold and almost dark, the stroker motor is no closer to running than it was, I guess $125 for good late model cam towers and a stock cam isn't the end of the world.
I have pistons to hang on the wall of shame with sacrifices to the gods of speed.

Don….. a few years ago I bought a cylinder head for my MG Midget in exactly the same circumstances! When I got home, flipped it over and discovered a small crack (expertly packed with carbon) just like the NFG one I already had! All I ended up with was an expensive set of roller rockers, valves and springs!

It happens to all of once you are in the game for a while. I received a few heads from ebay that were fine in the pics but packaged with a single tissue of toilet paper. It was always the carriers fault. ::) ::)

Ewwwww, how about the ones who double box with your newly bought parts bouncing loosely in the double box five sizes too big, good grief! Putanginamo!

I texted the seller that it's a stock Honda cam, he said it should have been an RC454 or a Web 63D. He had both and will look through his stuff to see if he can find anything. He closed his performance motorcycle shop and his son is re-opening in a nearby town.
The dude got a liver transplant a couple years ago and still watched the shop for a year when his son had landed a really good day job. It turns out his kid raced my kids when we had Jr. Dragsters. Our paths have crossed many times before.
They have a motorcycle dyno and are back in business by appointment.

Welcome to the club Don. Over the years I've collected a lot of misrepresented parts. Some i simply gave away to someone that could use them, others are still boxed away as reminders of deals gone bad. On the flip side, I've purchased some really nice parts for a lot less than they were actually worth and made good friends with the sellers as a bonus.

I hope the gentleman makes good on the purchase and you'll be able to finally build that big stroker.

Yes we have all had bad deals , trusting people who live half way round the world can be a problem for me but generally people are good . Put it down to experience don and remember all the good deals instead

I showed Johnny the calendar pic of the Rat Race and asked him if he remembered the bike, it turned out he built a Hayabusa drag bike for the guy that I bought the Rat Race and the Turbo bike from, he was astonished when I told him the guy sold me three frames and a truck load of 750 parts. He said "that guy never told me that he had Honda parts" I would have made him a trade on the Hayabusa work, he was going to call Steve and give him a hard time.
