CB550 rear wheel bearings removal
« on: January 24, 2025, 12:05:40 PM »
Getting ready to take out the old bearings, bearing retainer off. Manual says "drive out the bearings". ? Which side do you start with? Do you drive one bearing in until the other side falls out, the reverse it? There must be a method to this, and i don't want to break anything.

Cheap method is apparently a concrete anchor inside the bearing hole expanded with a bolt until the anchor is snug and then driven out from the opposite side on the anchor face with a drift punch
Common sense.....isn't so common!

I  have always heated the hub up with a heat gun and they almost fall out. To install freeze the bearings and heat the hub up with a heat gun and they drop in!

Circulat drift, tap the centre spacer sideways, drift out bearing both go outwards.
Always new bearings as you have to drift on inner race to remove.
Bearing retainer is LH thread, tight and drill out the stakings

I just did this on my 500.  I removed the bearing on the retainer side.  I just used a drift from the other side.  I am replacing them so I didn't care about hitting the inner race of the bearing.

Thanks for the help, old bearings are out. Now to strip, clean and polish the hub before lacing up a new rim.
