Watching Mecum?
« on: January 30, 2025, 12:49:29 PM »
I just saw a nice original appearing blue-green 1970 CB750 go for $17,000 I didn't look at the close-up pics. Why am I trying to not finish my 4th K0?

I see a sandcast coming up in about 15 bikes thursday, T173

The F1 750 Super Sports are getting some love, a yellow one brought $13K. A 400 Super Sport got $15K, that was impressive. The T173 Blue-Green sandcast went for $39,500 Another CB400F SS got $10K.

Did they say whether they were low mileage originals or restorations?

Mecum tells you very very little about the bikes and oh hell no you're not talking to the owners.

I found the auction as it was happening and didn't have a lot of time to read up on what was presented. They did have quite a few pictures, I was wondering the same thing.
I believe there was a bike that was likely mis-represented that mecum reversed the sale on a couple years ago. I'm thinking it was a bitsa bike made up of pieces that the seller thought was an original machine.

Auctions are funny things (much like the people who attend them), in person is the only way I'd buy a bike, auction or otherwise. I still don't get how people buy a bike on eBay,(awful) or 'bring a trlr' or 'Iconic' or any online auction without actually seeing it, makes no sense. The problem I see more and more is "more money than brains". Just me...

I was watching the 77 750F on Wednesday. Thinking about a bike for Bonneville. Trying to gauge what one like that might go for. 15,000 miles and the engine looked unmolested from the condition of the screws and bolts. Mostly decent for my needs. The way I was thinking was some of Mike's Magic Head Wand and a cam and I might get a class record. I don't think they mentioned if it is a runner even? $3000 which was a little more than I hoped for. I tried contacting their hauler for information without any real success by the time that lot came up. Considering I'm not in the States I needed to be sure it could be taken to my home and what all the various expenses with this and the other fees would amount to. It seemed there was a slight delay in the actual feed and it was not sync'd. It was sold a few seconds before it showed sold. With the lack of information we are provided and the fact I'm in the Caribbean I did not pull the trigger. Had I actually been there to inspect and bring it home... maybe.

Sure didn't think the yellow one would draw anywhere near that amount. Nice bike, low miles.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Wow, the 1970 police bike brought $55,000, in addition to the red sandcast at $50,000. It appears folks are getting their money out of the stock market.

While watching this year I was thinking why bid so much for an unseen bike over the internet 😳. No telling the corners people cut to make a turd shine, no reasonable recoup if you get that turd that grenades when you start it..... People with too much money burning a hole in their pockets. I'm an in-person face to face buyer.
And then you have to deal with listening to the babbling auctioneers that think their babbling is cool. So much is lost in language skills so people can understand what you say. How many times did they have to reverse the prices because of their mumbling......

Most serious buyers attend and look at the bikes they may bid on.
When I was there a reporter came to me and was asking questions, I know quite a bit about old bikes, as the reporter asked questions people started to gather around us, it was an interesting experience.

Yes, it as annoying, don't know why.

I have to say that I do enjoy listening to the British auctioneers a lot more than the Americans, I'm not really sure the origins of the machine gun style, I might have to look it up.
I must say that I'm amazed at the number of bidders going into the 5, 6 and even 7 figure ranges.
