Leaking from an odd spot...
« on: July 23, 2007, 05:43:32 AM »
When I rebuilt the engine on my CB750 F1, I used one of the cheap "Complete Gasket Sets" that you find on ebay. After seeing a lot of the discussion on the boards about the cheap quality of some of these sets it didn't surprise me to find a small oil leak on the left hand side of the bike. After tightening down the bolts on that side I took it out for a nice 90 mile ride up and over the Appalachian Gap (nice, twisty mountain pass kind of road), I got home to find that I still had a bit of a leak. Looking around, I found that it was coming from one of the side generator bolts.

It's the bottom right bolt in the picture. Why would oil be leaking out of here?

After sitting for a week, here is the spot on the floor. Most of it fell in the first day, but it seeped a little bit all week long.

The bike had been sitting on it's side stand, if that makes any difference.

Screw is either too long or an over length screw was fitted at some time and damaged inside of cover.
Put a dab of silicon on threads (not on end of bolt) and re-fit (or get a copper washer under bolt head)
