valuable clutch lesson!

found out the hard way that the plate on the inside of the clutch, on my 1973 cb 750 , can sit two diffrent ways, clutch would not engage properly, turned it 180degrees works fine now! same plate that the 4 springs sit on. Went for 1st ride of the year, couldnt wait, still snow in the ditches, works great! thanks again jonesy. ;

Please clarify. The only reason I ask is I've had this long unresolved clutch glitch that I've never resolved. It works, but it's irritating.
The plate that the springs sit on????? No way this could be backwards.

the piece that the lifter plate bolts to with the four posts, sorry I couldn't find the proper name of it. I put my clutch together and it wouldn't engage properly pulled, the clutch apart again and noticed that the plates had approx an 1/8 gap, read a post on clutches and found that if you rotate the piece with the posts 180 degrees clockwise and reinstall, no more gap! I thought it didn't matter which way you lined it up but I guess it does.

Are you talking about number 18? the lifter plat?

on your top diagram its the second piece from the right, found it in my clymer manual,its the clutch pressure plate!

AH yes! I forgot about that bit. I noticed that as well when I was doing clutch maintenance.

The piece that rests in the clutch basket, and pulls the clutch plates together.

Its a pressure plate.
The easiest way to assemble is remove the centre bearing, fit all the springs etc( make sure the drive dogs on inside a matched up). You now have a complete clutch pack. Use a socket through the centre to fit centre nut.( where the bearing is going to fit)
After torquing it down, fit the bearing and its done
(you really think they mess about assembling the damn things in the factory?)

The possition 180 deg one way or the other should not matter.  Unless it is some how different than my 350.  Sounds like it could by warped.

The 750 clutch holes are offset. There is a correct and an incorrect way of meeting up the pressure plate with part number 2 on the diagram.

The worst part about having it the incorrect way is that there is a good chance of breaking a post off the pressure plate while tighting the 4 bolts on the bearing carrier! Don't ask how I know.
