How much header wrap & updated pics
« on: March 23, 2007, 11:42:37 PM »
Well the project seems to be coming along nicely. I've rebuilt the frot brakes, filled a few dents in the tank and repainted the tank (emblems need to be reinstalled) replaced the shifter and clutch seals and replaced the rotting out exhaust with some new (old) pipes. The new pipes I cleaned up and sprayed with a heat resistant enamel and now want to wrap them. I'm planning on wrapping the headers and the collector as well down to just before the baloney cut in the collector. I've been looking around and have been finding mostly 2''x50' and 2''x100''. Would a 50' roll be enough?

Here's an updated pic of the bike with the pipes that are to be wrapped. Thanks everyone!

50' should be fine as long as you use the 2" and not the 1".  Just don't over due it on the overlap.

I am planning to wrap my F3 with the four into 1 stock exhaust. I have heard from other bikers that you should pre-dampen the wrap using distilled water (to prevent lime and alkaline deposits) or alcohol. This will shrink the wrap when it dries and provide a very nice looking tight fit. Has anyone here heard of the same technique?

Yes, you definitely want to soak (wet) the wrap.  I've personally never heard the distilled water part.  I just used tap/well water.  Once they were dry, I painted them with VHT header paint and used my hand to smooth down some of the fiberglass fibers (make sure you use gloves).  The paint part was my personal choice mainly for color reasons, but I would think it help seal the wrap some as well.  Once the paint was dry enough to touch, I mounted the pipes and fired up the bike to dry the rest of the way.  Talk about smoke/steam!!!  :)

Also, a trick I learned from a ProTeal post is start your wrap from the collecter end and work towards the header.

xtalon,

Yes I have heard this one. And I will be using some really neat Panduit stainless steel tie clamps to hold the wrap at the header. Drawing included below. There have round edges and a very low profile binding head. I will be buying quite a few of them so I am sure I will be making them available to club members...
