removing a clutch (or how do you use this tool)

ok so I'm taking a stab at removing my clutch since I never got it off last year.

My honda shop recommended and sold me a motion pro clutch holding tool.
it is a pair of vice grips with a 90 angle at the end and two little round peices on the backside.

heres a picture:


I have no idea how this thing is suppsoed to work.  I'm trying to get that stupid special nut off inside the clutch but the interrior just rotates freely.

any advice on how this thing is supposed to work would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to try my new nifty air tools tomorrow and see if that helps as well

I'll let you know tomorrow night, were taking a look at my 750 clutch before we button the engine up...

Two ways you can get that nut out of there, guy the clutch nut socket from Z-1 or use a drift punch to spin it off.
I have only removed a clutch from a 750 and not installed one, I would think that having the appropriate tool would make reinstalling a lot easier.

Don't use that thing, they suck.
You are suppost to grip the splines on inner hub (you cant anyway on most Honda's as they have internal pressure plates)
Remove center bearing and leave clutch assembled then use special tool ( if you already took it apart, remove bearing and put everything else back together)
You need the peg spaanner and extension bar, then its easy

The tool you pictured is for holding the outer clutch basket. To accomplish that you can simply put the bike in gear and apply the rear brake while undoing the nut. If you haven't used the thing yet see if you can return it.

That tool works perfectly well if you have the socket to turn the nut as well! What you have is to clamp onto the spline parts of the inner hub(where the steel plates go) after you have removed all the plates so that you can stop the centre rotating whilst you undo the "special" nut

I have the nut removing tool similar to what jonesy posted.

I dont see where this is supposed to grab anything.  I havent removed the special nut yet and the center plate doesn't really have anything to grip to (#3 in picture below)  I put the bike in gear and lay on the rear brake it still doesn't come free I think its REALLY stuck.  I'lll give my air tools a shot later and see what they can do.

I have 650, but what i did (frequnetly lately, as i was having trouble with starter clutch - solved now!) was:
Take a socket wrench size 24
dremel it out to form a tool to remove the special nut
block the engine - 2 ways - easy way, put on side stand, step on rear brake, and go!
2nd way - block the transmission either using special tool,  or wooden stick in the wheel, or a coin between the cogs :)

And there you go, you should have the clutch off....

I told you the correct and easiest method.
 Remove the bearing ( part #14 I think), leave all the plates and springs in place and undo it through the hole.
If you have an air impact just burp it out

ok thanks to everyone here, it finally came free.  I pretty much tried everything and the sucker finally broke free.

found out an interestind side note after getting it apart.

the previous owner only had a total of 7 friction plates(the ones with teeth) instead of the usual 8.

still had 7 of the metal clutch plates in there though.  what sort of problems would this have caused?

also one of the metal clutch plates is discolored (brownish/black) should that be replaced? it looks like it had gotten toasty at some point...

Don't know about the brownish clutch plate, but as it was burned into my brain today, make sure all the steel plates have the beveled edge facing the same way upon reassembly.  Also, make sure the assembly is properly seated before tightening it back down, as if it is off kilter it can break.

I know the 750 has a beveled edge, as well as the 550.  When we did the 750 yesterday we faced the edge out.
