CB750K5 tappet noise continues
« on: November 19, 2018, 12:00:38 PM »
Hi folks,
Completed my restoration on this unit in June this year and everything seemed ok when it was run for the first time. The next time out I noticed a tappet noise and have not been able to fix. Adjustments have been made repeatedly with very little improvement. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave Sharpe

Did they grind the stems on the valves ?
Look for pitting on the stems.

Check the exhaust gaskets

+1 or the exhaust collar bolts probably need tightening.

First, ensure that oil is being fed to both sides of the cam by removing the tappet covers and observing the oil flung off the rocker arms; if there is inadequate oil supplied, damage to the cam and rockers will happen rapidly.
If the oil supply looks OK, and an exhaust leak is suspected, use a length of rubber tubing with one end held next to your ear, probing around the suspected leak area with the other end of the tube.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
