I must be tight with Santa !
« on: December 26, 2007, 09:52:16 AM »
The old guy came up with a
railroad crossing bell--about 2 feet tall--probably weighs 75 pounds--and it works !
I just happen to already have 2 of the large crossing lights.
Some type of structure is in order.
Maybe even a multimedia presentation.

A friend of mine has one of the old railroad clocks that was synchronized using the telegraph lines. It escapes me exactly how the system worked, but it basically grabbed the hands and dropped them at 12 twice a day. During the time the sync was going on the operators couldn't use the telegraph lines for a minute or so. Interesting gadget!

Does that say 6 to 17 volts?  I would hate to think about how much current it would take.

.....further down in the text it says 600 milliamp. Must be a good mechanical design for that low current.

Duster,

I'm not an "over the top" rail fan--like some I'm aware of.
Mainly like the history, utility and heft of rail items.
Another heavyweight in the collection is this Recording Speed Controller
from an early 20th century French steam locomotive.(clock winds up with the pliers)

 Recording Speed Controller

a what?
This was mounted in the cab of the locomotive and made a continuous recording of the speed and the time--graphed it out on the paper on the roller.
Also includes a
"Dead Man's Switch". which would stop the train if it wasn't pressed down at a prescribed interval.

I like trains, and am also not nutty about them, but I did have to explain ( i think in the shameless thread) why it says "Do Not Hump' on an Amtrak car, and what humping was( at least as has to do with trains).

I do miss Potomac Yard.
