cb400f - Cam chain tensioner adjuster bolt needed
« on: March 26, 2007, 07:37:04 AM »
Does anyone have a cam chain adjuster bolt (the one you loosen to get rid of chain slack in the cam chain) and the lock nut that they can part with?  Mine was used with an incorrect nut and it mashed up the threads pretty bad.

Here are the numbers from the parts manual.

90016-286-000 BOLT, TENSIONER SETTING
94002-08000-0S BOLT, HEX, 8mm
94101-06000 WASHER, PLAIN, 6mm
91317-703-000 O-RING, 6x1.7

Its a standard M6 setscrew and locknut but relieve the end ot the threads so that when you tighten it and it "mushrooms" it dont get so big it wrecks the threads in the casting when you unscrew it

I do not really understand what you were trying to say.  The bolt does not look standard at all to me.

Ah that is because the post i saw didnt say 400. Yes the 400 is different but you can use a standard 6 mm setscrew with a 6mm nut and a plain washer to the case. You may get a slight oil weep but nothing serious and you MUST relieved the threads on the end where it clamps on the adjuster bar or when you undoo it later it will damage the threads in the case.

I Know this will work because the proper bolt was always difficult to get and i did this many times when working for a Honda dealer---just explained to the customer that he had the option of a possible oil weep or a 4-6 week wait for parts! I will let you guess which happened!!

As said above, a regular 6mm bolt will work fine just file down the end of it to make it look like the one in the picture. The original bolt is no longer available from honda. I just repaired one a couple weeks ago without any problems.

Is the damage in the picture common?  Or does it indicate that the previous owner used the wrong size nut?

It's pretty uncommon, especially on such a rust-free looking bolt, but hard to say whether it was the wrong nut or even cross-threaded. Usually the threads in the crankcase get stripped instead, which is not such a simple fix.

Oh, I cleaned up the bolt with a wire wheel in preparation of replating.  That is why it looks so clean.  It was pretty rusty; so much that I cleaned up the threads to remove the rust debris before I sprayed oil on it and then tried to loosen the nut.

I have a lead for a replacement at Baltimore Cycle Salvage.  They said they think they have some cb350f motors in their junk yard.  I checked the cb350f parts manual and it is the same part number.  I hope to hear something tomorrow.
