I get it this Thursday. It needs the half moons replaced, the tailpipe mount is stripped, and the chain adjuster is bent. The half moons should take a couple minutes, I should be able to re-tap the tail pipe mount, but what about the chain adjuster? I figure that I pull the the rear wheel, slap the new ones on, throw it back on. Am I missing anything? Just measure from the rear fork to the tire on each side and as long as its exact it should be safe.....right?

Yea, I know the seat should go to, but that is just cosmetic.

Half moons are the piece between the exhaust and the engine that look like little half moons. As for the seat, I am picking up a parts bike the same day that has the original seat, so that will hold me over till I make or buy a cafe seat.

Index markers? What do they look like, lines?

Cleveland, do not throw that seat away..you got plenty of meat to trim your own cafe seat..i did it, you can too! use a electric carving knife
t trim how you want as far as profile..like sliciing turkey!! you can shave the rough edges & have someone cover it for you..i do my own!

As for the headlight visor, the cheapest I found was $20 before you guys showed me those links. If you ever in Milwaukee, I owe you a drink.

Hey Cleveland,
i'll have to find and scan them..we're in the process of moving as we speak..hate it..all i have is some "Chopper pix" from Photobucket right now..it ain't hard though
use a magic marker to do your side profile and start cutting like turkey..be careful not to take too much each pass..and then you can use a disc sander wheel
on a drill to smooth the edges....here's a few pix
I've gone back to Cafe and dropped choppers like a dirty baby dipey, so my cafe pix are "Somewhere" out in the garage in a box

DWYJ, I can't wait to see your cafe pics. I have found that every time I move, I loose something AND something gets broke. I hope the cafe seat pics is not one of the things you loose.

Hey,
always help whatever way i can, if you have any wrenching ability, you can do many things, i gave up my 1976 400 Four to cover tires and alignment for the wifes ride when we were strapped..i've had about 3 projects since, but none like the 400 Cafe..here's pix of my latest project,
i've started some stuff but the top end needs rings, and it needs tires, got the seat which i'm going to rivet like a 400Four..just takes money and time!!

Hi All,

I'll take the moving advice to heart; I'm moving to Menomonee Falls in May; I'll have to take inventory of all my stuff before and after the move

. Good news is I'll actually have my own garage to work on my bike. It's currently at my brothers and sister in law's house over in Waukesha. It'll be a whole lot easier to work on stuff instead of trucking all over the place. Show pictures as you make updates. I need some inspiration lately.

GOT IT!!!

I picked up a parts bike for it the same day. I replaced the chain adjusters because they were bent. Funny thing was the one's from my 750 were too small for the 550.

Taking off and putting back the rear tire was a lot easier then I thought it would be. I adjusted the chain so there was just under an inch of play, and now there seems to be a little more then an inch after riding it 50 miles or so. Is that normal? I assume I just tighten it a bit more.

Also the gears seem to be a bit stiff and and putting into neutral was hard. I would keep jumping over it and the bike made a funny noise like I was shifting it during the last couple miles. I pulled over when I heard it, but I didn't see anything. Then the rest of the ride home was fine.

This was the first ride for me. I left at around 12am and got home at 3am. I did a lot of stopping to adjust this or that. And as ugly as that seat is, it's damn comfortable!

CB550 in my garage.

Parts bike. I can't wait to refinish the tank and side covers from the parts bike. The tank does not have a lock on it!

Yep, it was not as wide. The chain it is not new, it came with the bike. While writing this I called The Shop and they figure it is a cheap chain. New ones $40 and an extra $35 for them to put it on while I'm at work (doesn't steal any ridding time

). No I did not change the oil, I was planning on doing that tonight.
