Just chuck a cheapl grinding stone into an electric drill and grind down the pin and then punch it out. Should cost uou $5.00

That's pretty dangerous; there is no way to hold the thing in place. For as little as $15 you can buy a cheapo chinese-made angle grinder. A chain-breaker will surely be more expensive and maybe you will never use it again.

I'm overseas just now.  Should get back in about 2 weeks, and straight back to clinical duties a day later, soooo....I'll post a pic, but it'll be a while.  Actually, I straightened the chain guard a little by hand taking it off.  It was properly mangled though; bent back and in towards the tire.  Good thing it didn't slash my tire in the process.

The chain was a fairly new O-ring chain with maybe 2000 miles on it.  :-(

Hey, I would like to thank ya for relaying your story about the chain mishap. It sucessfully motivated me to get off my bum and put a guard on my bike, finally.

I kept trying to find a metal, chrome one on eBay but finally realized only the black plastic ones were offered on the earlier CB500. The chrome metal ones I did find were all for CB550s and had different mouting hole thingies.

I ended up taking a CB750 chrome metal guard I got from my friend and made it work. . .lol. Actually, it all but bolted up - I did have to drill/tap one hole on the swing arm and make a couple brackets but it turned out real well and looks almost stock.

Anyways, thanks for the tale because that sounds too scary for my tastes, to have a broken bike chain flailing behind you! yikes   :o

So today I notice my left rear signal doesn't work.  I pull in to the nearest auto parts place to buy a bulb.  When I open the signal, the bulb inside is just shards of shattered glass.   Hmmmm, how did this happen?  And the square dent in the signal stem?  And the little bit of aluminum bitten out of the stem.  Oh, never mind.  Fix the signal and ride on.

When I get home, I tell my wife.  She right away says "the chain".  When the chain broke and mangled the chain guard, it whipped back and up all the way to the rear turn signal, denting the stem and breaking the bulb from the shock of the blow, before it went off down the highway.

Someone asked earlier for a pic of the chain guard.  I'm keeping it to remind me to be grateful, careful, and not take much for granted.

if you get the motion pro chain breaker you can take the breaker pin out of the threaded shaft. 
then, screw that shaft in on top of the link to compress the masterlink... the part where the pin normally goes will just go right over the pin in the chain.

if you think you may have compromised your masterlink w/ the pliers or whatever tool wasn't working... go buy a new master link.

That's a great tip, thanks!  I think I posted somewhere that in the end one of the old pros at Motorsport in ABQ said to use a nut and a C-clamp over each rivet/post.  It worked like a charm!  Your tip will be great if I ever need it on the road.  Less tools to carry.

As far as the thrown-chain incident, alls well that ends well.  The broken signal just emphasized how fortunate I really am in this case.  And I learned a few things...  ;)

hmmm bike looks cool with no chain gaurd, but  I look cool without a severed foot, tough call... guess that rusty chromed gaurd is goin back on again untill I figure something else out to save my bacon!

You were lucky.

I was riding a '77 Yamaha 250 enduro to work one morning when the rear tire locked up at 50mph.  I rode it out but it was plenty scary.  Can't imagine it happening at 90.  It turns out a tranny bearing wanted out of the left case.......real bad.  Left a hole in the case you could stick your hand through on edge.  Must have been at least 4" tall and 2" wide.

Somehow, I don't think the chain "broke".

I am willing to bet that it was simply loose, and jumped off the sprocket, causing it to get caught up at speed, thereby breaking.

Chains these days are SUPER STRONG.  These guys with 160HP run 520 chains on the street drag racing...they don't break under power, but a loose chain, all caught up at 90 MPH, well thats a different story.
