Titles and VIN #'s
« on: March 31, 2007, 02:03:17 PM »
I was in the process of purchasing a 70's era CB but the title's VIN # mathed only the engine and not the frame. Is this common?
I always thought that the VIN's were all the same from the title, engine stamp, and neck stamping. Please offer clarity.

Thank you, inadvance.

Frame and engine numbers don't match...not on the 750's anyway. The title should have the frame number not the engine number.  If your title matches the engine rather than the frame then you may have trouble registering it or getting it inspected. You would where I live anyway.

Just as I suspected. This model was a 200. I read somewhere that models VIN #'s varied as Honda reserved the option to swap motors between the CL and CB series. However, in terms of legal ownership, one is inclined to think VIN #'s between a vehicles frame and title should match.

Frames and engines were built on separate lines and then joined together at the end.  I'm not aware of anyone that has identical VIN numbers for both the engine and frame.  They should be close, but a match is highly unlikely.

Some states titled motorcycles to engine #, like Wisconson and Rhode Island. Your motor vehicle office will have a manual for all states and procedure to title it, usually involves a rubbing of the frame # using a pencil and paper.
I believe all Harley's are titled by engine # .

I had a 1967 Super Hawk that was registered using the engine VIN and not the frame VIN. In those days not a lot of attention was paid to VINs and the 5 years or so I had it - no problem. Even the guy I sold it to had no problem registering it.
Today would probably be a vastly different story.
