Coffee - Why did I stop? Drivel
« on: March 27, 2007, 05:50:06 AM »
Back in December, I quit drinking coffee cold turkey.  Before then, I would normally have a 20 oz. coffee in the morning and that was it for the day, but I found that I would feel sluggish come mid-morning and thought that it was the caffeine causing it, so I quit.

I really missed its taste and every time I would smell it brewing I began to salivate like Pavlov's dog.  But, I stayed strong and was over the cravings in about two to three weeks.

The winter months are gloomy he in PA and I truly think I have SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) which makes things a bit more grim.  Then, less than a month ago, I boogered up my body with an injury and a slow depression began to sink in.  My riding season ended before it began and I found myself a bit angry, which is quite the opposite of my normal demeanor, unless I am provoked.

So, this morning, I jumped back on the wagon and bought myself a large cup of leaded from a local roaster (voted the area's best) and WOW!  After my first sip I was like, "where have you been all my life?"  But at the same time, I realized how a drug addict, who had sobered up and then relapsed, must feel when they begin using again.

Hey, there's A LOT worse things to be addicted to, Sparty. :)  Besides, a moderate amount of coffee each day is supposed to be good for you.

I'm brewing my morning pot right now.  My auto drip broke a couple days ago and I have been using the old solid glass percolator.  Takes longer, but at least it there.  ;)

I hear you Gerhed, left 'bud' and 'bud' after 30+ years also. Its been said the denial of the pleasures of the flesh (quiting all the fun things in life) is a good and natural progression and a sign of maturity which allows one to focus on the metaphysical.  I'm not so sure.  Love my 2 cups every morning :)

I gave up drinking and smoking about 12 years ago - at the same time :o - after about 25 years of boozin and puffin, and I sure as hell aint giving up coffee, no matter how many people try and tell me it isn't any good for me. A nice strong coffee keeps me sane and helps the day begin.
If coffee is our only "vice" then we're doing ok I reckon.

What about our bikes?  2  to 3 cups before noon, tea from then until bed, 3 to 6 cups.

Yeh James - you're right. How about:
Get out of bed - coffee.
Go for a ride - coffee
Clean bike - lunch
Go for a ride - coffee
Snooze
Dinner - clean bike
Tea - go back to bed.

Sounds alright to me!  ;D

heh heh heh...Welcome back to the darkside sparty ;) I like to start my day with 8oz. of espresso toned down with 6oz. of warmed milk. After that the world is mine! All mine I tell you!

That's it for the day. If I drink coffee after noontime I'll have a real hard time getting to sleep at night. Of course maybe that wouldn't be the case if I didn't have so much high test caffeine coursing through my veins all the time due to the fact that I drink such a strong dose of it every morning and have for years and sometimes on the weekend I'll have two of those and then oh boy my days really fly by then so much so that I sometimes wonder if the weekend happened at all because Monday sure does seem to show up awfully fast and when it does I like to start it out with an 8oz. espresso toned down with 6oz. of warmed milk which really sets up my day because once that stuff kicks in I'm rarin' to go I tell ya' nothing can stop me not even the thought of another coffee because I know it will be weak if I don't make it myself and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay someone to make me a cup a joe that's nothing more than some hot water passed over some coffee grounds because that would just be a tease for the real thing and if I can't get the real thing then I'm not a happy camper and I refuse to give anyplace like Starbucks my money oh no I'm not doing that...them with their over roasted beans foolish names and "can you say gouging?" prices..."I'd like a medium dark roast please." "Would that be a venti sir?" "I don't know, is that some country I haven't heard of?" "No sir, it's the size of the coffee." "Well, I said I wanted a medium dark roast so  give me one of those." "Venti?" "Look, you have three sizes of coffee so give me the middle sized one and stop making it so freaking ridiculous to get a cup of damned coffee!!! Stop trying to reinvent the language and just get me my coffee!!!"

It's usually somewhere around that point that my head explodes ;D ;D

Keep the coffee coming...Mike

About 10 years ago, the wife and I thought of quitting caffeine.  Just about then one of the nursing journals published a small study of nurses who work the overnight shift.  The group that had no coffe had a higher suicide rate than the coffee drinkers.  We stuck with coffee.  On any given morning it prevents a homicide/suicide in at least one household.   ;D

I can have three or four espresso coffees a day. Not the way you know it in the US; strong, in an small cup with just a couple drops of milk. Sometimes I have sudden acceleration of the heartbeat without any reason; I cut down the caffeine for a couple of days and everthing goes well again.

I'm not a person until I have the first cup of coffe in the morning. I remember how my dad would left home after lunch on weekends to go to the bar and have his coffee. I couldn't understand it then; I understand now (espresso machines in bars here serve the best coffee if they know how to make it)

I knew I had become old the day I discovered I would have coffee at breakfast rather than milk with cocoa. I quit smoking 20 years ago and don't drink any alcohol besides an occasional beer or some champagne at family gatherings; I guess being addicted to coffee is not that bad after all.....

At risk of being heretical let me say that having quit high test a few years ago I drink only low test (aka decaff). Yes, I can hear all those moans and groans out there, but 'modern' decaff tastes as good (imho) without the side effects.

Hey, which one of you guys was saying your coffee maker machine broke, so now you use a perculator?

I bought a perculator coffee maker for use when I go camping..  The one thing these old percs have on new drip machines?  They produce LIQUID FIRE!!!  All perculators do this- they make coffee that is so hot, I burn my tongue with it every single time I use it, regardless of how long I let it sit in my mug to cool off it seems!  :)
