Motorcycle wisdom of the road

With apologies if you've seen these ad nauseum:

Midnight bugs taste best.
Saddlebags can never hold everything you want, but they can hold everything you need.
Home is where your bike sits still long enough to leave a few drops of oil on the ground.
The only good view of a thunderstorm is in your mirror.
Never mistake horsepower for staying power.
If you don't ride in the rain you don't ride.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed/shop/garage.
Young riders pick a destination and go. Old riders pick a direction and go.
A good mechanic will let you watch without charging you for it.
Sometimes the fastest way to ride there is to stop for the night.
Winter is natures way of telling you to polish your bike.
Well trained reflexes are quicker than luck.
A friend is someone who will get out of bed at 3am and drive his/her pickup to the middle of nowhere.
There is something ugly about a new bike on a trailer.
Practice wrenching on your own bike.
Never be ashamed to unlearn an old habit.
Maintenance is as much art as it is science.
If you ride like there is no tomorrow there won't be.
Grey haired riders don't get that way from pure luck.
There are drunk riders. There are old riders. There are no old, drunk riders.
No matter what brand you ride, it's all the same wind.

these are great...i'd seen a few, but not all.

A friend is someone who will get out of bed at 3am and drive his/her pickup to the middle of nowhere.

so it was 3 in the afternoon, and only a couple of miles from work, but just got back from picking a friends bike up from the tow shop.  some jackass turned left in front of her and she made contact and rolled over his hood.  fender's toast, tank's dented, forks are tweaked, but she's ok resting at home.

i love babies...

Will some mechanics let you watch learn if you ask them, I have been afraid to ask if i can watch my fork rebuild i need done, I love learning mechanical things, (of course if anyone here can tell me if its difficult i may try it myself)

While I was an auto tech I found that it's all in the way that the customer approaches the technician.  If someone would just wander over and stand out of the way watching, it was mildly annoying.  If they came over and did the same but talked 100 mph, very annoying.  If they came and asked if they could watch, I was usually glad to oblige, and it didn't bother me if they asked questions.  Sometimes, for their own safety, I would refuse (of course explaining that for safety reasons they could not be in the area) examples include removing springs from struts and doing A/C work.

It's all in the approach  ;)

In the Polaris shop I worked at, briefly, the public were definately not allowed in the shop. Liability was the main concern. However the mechanics were more than happy to come into the parts showroom to talk to the customer and explain exactly what they were doing/going to do.

Even better. There is a Sunday riding group hereabouts ('BORES') who meet for coffee and head out on their bikes at the toss of a coin, or by watching which way the wind blows...
