Hello all, ..

I posess a CB650 that I really like, .. a friend of mine is getting interested in picking up an older bike, .. one option is a '79 Honda CX500, which I know nothing about .. Would anyone like to comment on this type of machine?

I recall a number of posts regarding the CX500. If you type it into the search box, I'm sure it will turn-up a few threads.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I had a CX500 and now have a GL500 (just a cx with bags) and have found it
to be a dependable bike that sits very high, gets good gas milage
BUTthe chicks don't dig it like the cb750's.

Like every bike, it mostly depends on how it was taken care of.  In general, they are surprisingly sportive for a very dependalve workhorse.

Not sure what you mean by "sportive" to describe a CX500 Uncle Ernie, but
the only people I have ever known to own/ride one were to use
as Putt-putt machines. Probably why I sold mine right quick.
Yes, it did have good pickup, sounded nice BUT the image projected
was just not me.
peace,
michel

Well, the lastest Ducati it ain't, no.
Surprisingly sportive on the one hand and depedable workhorse on the other, sure.
Good overall bikes for commuting and stuff like that.

CX was designed to be operated at redline and thrown away when worn out. Most of the problems with CX are a result of being driven too gently, particularly the cam chain disasters ( you can get motor out, change all the tensioner's/guide and refit in about an hour, when you've had enough practice ::))

If he is tall advise him aginst the bike.

I am 6' tall and my kness would hit those funky cylinder heads, which got a bit warm.   :o
