Keep or send back
« on: March 28, 2007, 04:45:38 PM »
I recently ordered a new EK 630 o-ring chain rated at 10,300 tensile strength from DK.

As I have read on multiple posts, people swear that you need to change your sprokets when replacing a chain and there are a few rebels out there that claim they have gone without sprockets and no premature chain wear.

So I ordered up Parts Unlimited sprockets--stock teeth 14 & 43 and when I held them up to what I believe to be my original sprockets with 15G on them,  my old sprockets are actually meatier than the new PU sprockets.

Yes, I made sure to order the proper 630 cogs, but I am baffled how the old sprocket is measurable thicker between teeth than the PU sprocket.

So, do I

1) Keep the new sprockets as spares for years down the road when a 630 chain is a thing of the past and I use them for coasters

2) Install them regardless of my originals being in mint condition and filling the space between the links in better

3) Eat the 6.95 to have them shipped back to DK and get by 60 dollars back

What would you all do?

If your old sprockets are truly mint hold on to them for the future. Since tens of thousands of sport bikes not to mention the Harleys that all use 630 chain, 630 chain will be around for a long time.

Second.

Might as well hold onto them. Think of it as an investment. Someday, with healthy riding the sprockets will wear out, and now you already have the new ones.  :)

I have my rear wheel apart and I was checking out my sprocket.  There is minimal wear on it, but I want to know if there was wear, couldn't you flip the sprocket over and use the reverse side?

Also if you switch to a 530 chain, which sprocket do you change, front, back, both?
what are the advantages of switching to this kind of chain and if I order a 530 chain how many links does it need to be.

Sorry about the hijack.

I don't have HD money LOL.

I will have a total of about 800 into this old girl to make it pretty darn road worthy.

I just figured I would hang onto the sprockets to have them in stock.

Parts in stock are a good thing.

As far as the 530 guy is concerned yes you need sprockets for 530 pitch.

I believe the links remain at 88... someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Send them back. You can always re-order sprockets when the need arises.
After all, you might concider a differant ratio or who knows, you might even sell the bike.

Could use the $60 for something needed now, like BEER!

Cheers

If you go to 530,there will be more links.....its like about 100 but could be + or - depending on sprocket sizes.
