B-J Palm Beach vs. Scottsdale
« on: March 31, 2007, 01:12:28 PM »
Guys,

I have been watching the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Palm Beach on Speed.  I had the opportunity to go to the Scottsdale auction this past January.  Amazing car, just mind blowing restos, and unbelievable amounts of money exchanged.

When I am ready to buy, I will go to the Palm Beach Auction instead of the Scottsdale Auction because of what I have been seeing and following via the internet.  I saw more than a few restos and resto mods sold at Palm beach for “affordable” prices compared to Scottsdale.  I think that many used up their money in AZ and the cars in PB are selling at a major discount.  I saw a $185,000 resto sell for $38,000!!!!  And a few other $100,000 plus resto-mods sell for near the same.  Talk about a buyers market.

I think Barret -Jackson are being sued for underselling restored cars and also inflating prices by buying them themselves( through agents)
Anyone know anything?

That would be major news , if true.
There's always the possibility of the house pulling some tricks at an auction.
Palm Beach seems to have an inordinate number of 'Vettes.
Even though I have a stock 1930 Modal A, I am becoming a resto-mod fan.

I went to an IMSA race at the auction site back in the 80's--attached

Hooo boy - way too much info and way too many topics to type in a thread reply. The suits and countersuits and the..... are insane.
Shill bidding, short-gaveling, internal selling to inflate prices - just plain nuts. And look at the prices at Palm Beach - about 1/3 to 1/4 of the prices prior to the last Scottsdale auction. Craig is going to be in a world of hurts for the next year or so. A state judge was one of the owners who is sueing for short gaveling.
And I guess at Palm Beach there was some sort of Chip Foose creation that stalled at $200,000 and was about to get gaveled when the next bid was $300,000. Suspicious huh?

Go on any of the collector car forums and while the heat is dropping off of from BJ from the last Scottsdal fiasco, there are srtill many threads running on about it.

I think that's Tom Wakishaw (sp?) himself in the tube socks--Car was driven by Davey Jones.
Wakishaw eventually won the LeMans 24 Hr. with the Jag--as the team owner.

It is a shame that greed would take over at what could be a profitable auction without cheating.

The Hertz Shelby GT500 was bought by Craig Jackson, the money went to charity, but he set a price figure for future sales of that car.  Once Hertz sells off those car in one or two years, even though they were rentals, they will likely fetch big $$$$.
