Damn computers
« on: March 28, 2007, 06:30:26 PM »
My newish computer has decided it can no longer connect to the internet.
I had it connected through a dsl modem/router with this computer.
I've tried swapping cables throwing cables around the room and no luck.
I've made sure no firewalls are on, as yet I haven't applied my on
type of firewall to it.

I've tried to run the network wizard, I hate damn wizards.

I'm running XP home on it and XP Pro on this one.

It has a built in network cable connector from the MB,
I think I put a network card in this computer but I really
don't want to look in it in my current state of mind.

Any ideas will be appreciated,

I had several issues with my network card. Cutting in and out when first installed for no viable reason. So I'd constantly remove it and re-install it until one time it just worked. Still don't know what the problem was.      :-[

Don't know how comp savvy you are so you may have tried this.  Go to Network Connections.  Go to your current active Network Connection.  Rt-Click, and select Repair...May fix it.

Doing Repair has never worked for me ever.

If you have DSL you may not have a constant connection, meaning you need to log into your service at the router.  Assuming it's set up properly, have you tried power cycling the router?

Also, your router may not be assigning an IP address properly to your computer.  To see if you have a good IP address:

Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Network Connection and find your DSL connection (probably "Local Connection").  Right-click it and choose Status.  Then click the "Support" tab.   If you're on a router, a standard IP address would typically be 192.168.0.xxx.  Also see if your subnet mask has numbers in it, typically 255.255.255.0.  If your IP address is bad, it'll be all 0's.

Well, usually what would work for em with the repair is the renewing of the IP address, either Comcast or my router used to get quite confused...

I thought there was a way to do a release/renew manually but I can't remember what it is.

I have a D-Link wireless router and it was really spotty when I first got it.  I've since upgraded the firmware and it's much more stable.

Another option is to skip the DHCP altogether and manually assign an IP address but it depends on how Rocking-M has it hooked up.

I have the wireless DSL router, and I suddenly acquired a problem with my laptop accessing the router.  A phone call to the SBC (my service provider)  help desk was all I needed to get it sorted out.  Not sure what was done to correct this, but it worked.  Give your people a call to see if they have a solution for you.

Start
Run
type in CMD then hit enter
at the command prompt type; ipconfig /flushdns the hit enter
you can also try these as well
ipconfig /all will show the your IP address, default gateway, subnetmask, MAC address, DNS servers, ect.... (run this also on your Pro box to check known good settings)
ipconfig /release will release the DHCP leased IP address
ipconfig /renew will query the DHCP server in you router for a new IP address

Check the configuration of your router to make sure that it is dishing out DHCP address, other wise you will need to assign a static IP address to you new machine.

Clear as mud ;)

I think I've tried all the above. Even tried the ping test from the command prompt.

It will not ping the default gateway and the default gateway is the same on
both computers hooked to the router. I guess I'll have to call the SP help.

SO is this a combo router/modem? Or do you have 2 separate pieces or gear?  If it is 2 separate, plug the modem directly into one pc and see it you get a connection. You may need to restart the pc to get a connection.

If you dont get one, then it is either the hardware or the line coming into the house.  If it works then, your router has lost its settings for some reason or it is not working right. If you can ping the gateway, your pc is not the issue.

If it is a 1 piece unit, do a reset on it. most of these units have a reset function for the router portion. This will set it back to default settings which should then allow you to get a connection. If still no connection, call your isp then. You either have a line issue of some type or your unit is possibly toast.

I found it after a lengthy talk with tech support.

I went out an got a new D-link ethernet adaptor and
plugged it in and here it is ;D

seems my built in ethernet on the motherboard had toasted itself.
I say good riddance ;D

Work at a college with a mac. Seen plenty of problems with macs. They are not that great.  E-mac, mini mac , both CRAP!!!!
Try opening a mini mac once. Make sure you got a real thing putty knife. Yes, putty knife as you have to pop the clips on the sides with it. Then you have to pull out the HD, just to get at the ram. Botom line is a computer is nothing but hardware and it is all the same. It fails at anytime. Apple has just as many issues as any windows machine, ESPECIALLY their servers!

A pc is only as good as the hardware you buy it with and mac is not the uber computer. It all comes down to how you use it. ;)

We have over 2000 computers on this campus.

3 and thats it.

And I thought we where over-worked with 6 1/2 techs for 3200 or so, but then again from one end of the district to the other will take about 3 1/2 hours to drive, 32 schools from k to 12. Mostly windoze, a few macs.

PEBKAC errors always tic me off. ;)

Well it is the same with anything. You get some person that thinks what they have is best or sucks but it is mainly cause they dont know what they are really doing or they have not used anything else or are basing all their info on poor or old sources.

Everything has its quirks! :)
