Anyone ever make their own seat?
« on: March 28, 2007, 01:14:38 PM »
Here is the deal, I would love to keep the convenience of the stock seat pan, but am not real cool on the looks of a stock seat. So, question is, anyone ever take the pan and maybe fashion a "cafe" speed hump in the back? Something like all the fiberglass seats you see on ebay. Here is my general plan, first fashion a rear 'speed hump', from glass or metal or whatever, then cover the forward portion with some good foam, and the rear hump with some as well, but much thinner, to keep the shape. Take the whole deal to an upholstery shop, and get it covered in some sort of fabric, leaving me with a useful seat that can bolt right on.

What do you all think? I love doing things on my own, so if it's hard to do, then I'll just learn it, and have just that much more satisfaction when it's done ya know?

Exactly what I'm looking for,  but without the wicked price tag...They seem to be REALLY expensive on ebay...

I'm about to do that exact thing.... only I was going to smooth the fiberglass and
paint the hump.... do the upholstery myself.   save me some bucks....
I'm going to try and start it this weekend... I'll post pics if I'm successful.

There's several guys on here that have built there own seatpan / speed humps
Look a couple pages back at "my first cafe build"  - he's built one himself and there's some
good pics.    There's another one fairly recently as well - can't remember who, but it was posted in the last month or so.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

This is made from a stock pan. The hump was made with foam from a can, then duct taped to seal the foam, fiberglassed, body filler to smooth it out, and sealed .The main foam was trimed to fit, sanded for shape, and then had a guy cover it for me.

Here's mine...stock 750F seat pan, sheetmetal rear, dense foam padding, not too far back either.  Very comfortable....way more comfy than the stock seat.

I made mine for around $20. You can see pics here: http://www.fiaccone.com/CafeRacer/Cafe.html. Scroll down a bit. I also wrote a description. Obviously, I need to finish her off.

        Hey Steve,
As you can see, there are lots of seats that have been created on this forum. Here are 2 others: StevieMac ( the hump piece is from the rear of a Sportster gas tank) and DMEs, that he made his self.

Wow, nice SS Steve. I really like the silver frame with the yellow sheet metal.

I built the seat in my avatar from the stock seat pan. Just built the hump with hardware cloth and fiberglass. It's an F seat, so it has a natural up-turn at the back versus the K models which are a bit more flat.

From looking at some other pictures, not all seat pans fit right against the frame the way it should to look good, but that's your job to play with it a bit and make it look good (Or at least make it look good to you... since you're really the only one that matters.  ;)  )

Made this one by cutting 9 inches out of the middle of a stock F model pan.

Built my own seat using original seat pan hinge and locking mechanism.
A little plywood, some padding and Nagahyde.
Rear hump and light portion is from a Kawa H2, I think.

Made this seat by laying fiberglass over a foam mold then removing the foam. The padded part is a ply frame coverd in foam and rapped in vinyl and fastened to the ply with staples......Total cost about 20 bucks. The padded part is to tall I plan on removing some pad.

If you like the do it your self stuff it's not that hard it's just trial and error

Here's some info on using the rear portion of a gas tank for the cowl part of the seat.
                                                     Later on, Bill :) ;)
