Need checkerboard decals for your CAFE?
« on: February 23, 2007, 09:03:13 PM »
Go here............   www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHX90&P=M

or to a local hobby shop that deals in RC planes. $2.99 for a 3ft x 5" sheet. Comes in black/white, black/clear, red/white, red/clear, black/yellow, etc.

I know I've seen it sold for "bikes" for alot more.

EDIT: fixed your link (SteveD)

How do you apply it?  With heat?  Same as in the directions for installing on an R/C airplane wing?

Interesting idea KC!

The ones I've used for my R/C planes are adhesive backed.

I had an old scrap of the checkerboard decal left-over from my RC days. Put it on an old tank and sprayed clear over it. No bubbling, blistering, lifting, peeling, etc.  So I guess they are good to go.

Went to the local hobby shop and picked up a black&white strip today. Would have been cheaper to buy from Tower Hobbies but they always say "Support your local shop"  ;D

Still trying to figure out how wide of a strip to put down the tank. Its 5" wide and I think that is a little much. Might cut it down to 2" wide....that will give me 3 rows of checkers and maybe not be too overbearing. Will help keep wrinkles out of it too.

reproduction decals has a 2 inch checkerboard stripe.  click on 'decals', then 'non-OEM style decals'

http://www.reproductiondecals.com/

(the yamaha block stripe looks good too)

Well I put the decal on my tank and seat pod. Used 3 rows of checks......1 1/2"  not 2" as stated above. The squares are 1/2".

Not really sure if these are gonna be the ticket. The scrap piece I stuck on the 450 tank was black and clear and its made up of 1 layer. This black and white strip I put on my 750 went on different and looks to be made of 2 layers. It doesnt like the curve of the pod. Would probally need to be slit at some points to get it to lay flat and not lift. Doesnt look bad from a distance but Im not really happy with it.

It did break up the green some though.

If they were made for RC airplanes, you might be able to get them to conform to the curve by the use of a Heat gun (careful you don't melt the paint). Even a hair dryer, for that matter, might be the ticket to get it to fit better.

Worth a shot anyway.
