cb550, another blinker thread...two tired?
« on: April 11, 2006, 01:28:13 am »
i looked through the old blinker problem threads and couldn't find the same problem previously discussed, so here goes.

turn signal lights, yes. blinking relay, no. i have scoured the wiring diagram, and everything seems to be connected properly, but the relay doesn't open and close. i swapped the grey and black wires (which shouldn't matter anyway...checked it on another bike) and still  no blink. the black stays hot, and the grey goes hot when i flip the signal switch. does this seem correct? all of this is with a new blinker tested to be functioning properly.

The standard stock winker relay is both voltage and load sensitive.
A weak battery = no blink
The stock lamps were 1073 and 1034, I think.  Common auto parts store replacements are 1157 and 1156 which are higher wattage and can give winker issues such as no blinking.  LED lamps are unlikely to work with the stock flasher.

Some people just buy electronic three terminal relays for thier custom bike mods.

dang i know probably less than anyone on this board, so take this with a grain of salt. Did you replace the relay flasher yet? i had the same problem then i replaced my relay flasher (get one for a few bucks at autoparts stores) and now the turn signals work.

yes, i have used a new blinker. i'll double check the voltage, lloyd. i hadn't thought of that possibilty. i'll have to open the fixtures up to see what type of bulb they are. they're aftermarket bullet style signals that came with bulbs installed. not led though.

Hate to drive in the relay thing again, but i tired an aftermarket from the dealer that didn't work, but got one from autozone that did in fact work. Some will speed up, slow down, or just not work with the system at all. I was SURE my relay worked, but as it turns out i was wrong. Just a bit of advice take it with a grain of salt as well.

i checked the blinker on another cb550 to be functional. didn't have my multimeter handy so i couldn't check load and voltage, but i did check out the bulbs: 12v 23W. they're little shorties, not like standard turn or stop bulbs. just to be ssure, i'll pop the fixture on a working circuit just to rule that component out.

sure enough, an electronic relay fixed my problem. must have been the aftermarket bulbs. thanks again, lloyd!

After I pulled my headlight out to try to get my new kill switch working the Blinkers suddenly decided to stop blinking they just stay solid now. :(   I  checked the grey wire (pulsed power) and get no juice from it not even pulse juice.   My battery is in need of replacement but this happens with the bike running and also with a battery charger hooked up.  Everything else electrical works fine     Any ideas??

Thx,
Doug

Contradictory statements.

Since the turn signal power comes from the winker relay, one has to wonder how the bulbs get any power to illuminate?
The winker contacts "rest" in the on state, and interupts when enough power has been drawn through the bulbs/winker.  The winker then cools while interrupting power making it rest again and resuming contact.  The cycle repeats.

I know you have non-stock blinkers.  But, I don't know if your fronts are dual filament like the originals or single filament.
Also, I don't know if both your front AND rear signals are on when the t/s switch is selected.

In short, your problem statement has major flaws and is unsolvable as is.

I can only speculate:

I as recall, your kill switch is a grounding/shorting type when pressed.  You will have to add a relay to make this switch function properly with the SOHC4 ignition.  What have you got the kill switch wired to now?

The stock winker relay is voltage sensitive, until the battery achieves a certain voltage or charge state, the winkers may not blink at all.  A charger or even running the bike does not make an instantaneous battery charge status change.  It may take some time.  Or, with some battery failures, never.
If you are not getting any power on the Grey wire, what voltage do you get on the Black wire going to it?
If you have power on the black wire, but never any on the Grey wire, the winker relay is likely blown.

Did you use the LB and O wires for your signal light connections?  Or, the LB/W and O/W wires for your turn signals?

Cheers,

Sorry if this is terse.  I have a cold.

Hi TT,

My wife and I both have a cold as well...... :'(

After I pulled the headlight to expose the connections I just did a quick system check to make sure everything was still working prior to making any changes.  That's when I noticed the turn signal issue.  So, as of yet I have not made any changes for the kill switch to work.   The prior day I had taken it out for a ride and the turn signals were working fine.

Both the front/back and left/right both come on solid.   I am not really sure how they are getting power as the wire called the main TS wire from the universal control is wired to the bikes grey wire and as best I can tell the grey wire is not providing any power right now.   Unless the control is providing power via the specific left / right TS wires.   I will check that.

I am going to pick up a new battery tomorrow and get it charged up and installed then will try again.   That will narrow down the possibilities.  If they don't work after that change I will try replacing the blinker gadget.

Thx and hope your cold passes quickly,
Doug
