I was thinking about these:

Is it compatible with a completely stock 1973 CB500 Four?

Thanks.

Says right on it that they are intended for machines with Dyna 2000 and 3000 ignitions - therefore my guess is no.

If you plan on using the stock points ignition I would use the following

Alternatively there are units that look identical to the original CB500 coils.
The ones at Z1 although not identical to the original,  have the advantage that you can easily replace the HT leads, which is definitely a bonus.
If you use too low a resistance you will burn your points out very quickly. The stock coils are 4.5-5.0 ohms and the lower resistance ones normally are used with electronic units such as Dyna etc.
I have heard of people using 3.0 ohm coils from the DOHC 750/900, but they will reduce your point life considerably

If you are staying with points, the ones Clyde pointed out are a good option.

Alternatively these are a little cheaper ($72 the pair), but they do have the wires molded into the coils like the ones on your bike today.

Thanks for the quick replies.

The coils i originally posted about ALSO say that they can be used with factory electronics too....but maybe not.

I'm thinking i'm going to go with the ones clyde posted...

thanx again...

Another common option is to use coils for a cb750/900 dohc. You cant get coils for this app on partsnmore.com.  They are lower ohmage than the stock coils but it is a relatively common mod and they have replaceable ht leads. They are $30 each.
You just need to make sure you wire connections are clean a.nd that your charge system is adjusted properly. Points do wear out sooner though.

Since when are points AUTOMATICALLY not considered electronic factory components?

I got what you mean...you're just not saying it right...

I beleive he is refering not to FACTORY ORIGIONAL, but not completely electronic.
Points inherently are a mechanical metheod of timing your coil pulses.
Electronic systems have no parts that are affected in this way.
The two systems use different metheods for the same result of timing the firing of the coils.

Dynatek recommended I not use the D2-1 coils even though I have electronic ignition('79 cb650), it has no "dwell" (they lost me there).

Soos, dwell is the amount of crank rotation angle that the points are closed.  This determines how long the coils are 'charged' between ignition discharge cycles.

3 ohm coils put quite  a straign on the electrical system.

Factory coils are 5 ohm.

So what about these http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1307
